IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There has been study today that numerous medical centers are financed by a private group of people, and others debating who should perform or complete the said study either private companies, individuals, or government.I am of the opinion that this should financed by the government.
In recent studies mostly private companies are always involved in any projects that will help the owner and the staff gain more profits.
The Government must do the job they should be the one sponsoring and helping the medical research team, because this medical research if becomes successful the one will benefit with this is all the citizens.
and also citizens are paying a lot of taxes so instead of wasting the money on other things atleast they should give time to study the medical projects and help as much as they need.
Whereas, if a private company or an individual helps the medical research team this will be benefited only to them, they can sell it to the government at a big amount of money later on or to the citizens if the study became successful.
Therefore, The government must always support people of any research study. because if the group of people will help it will be more difficult to access the research easily and there is always a payment its not free for any of this, while if the government will support then it might be free of charges or if there is a charge its not that expensive.
In conclusion, I am of the view that this medical research project will be a great deal if the government will help financially the medical investigation team.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that government funding is preferable. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you mention that private funding is profit-driven and government funding benefits citizens, these points are repetitive and lack depth or specific examples. To reach a higher band, you should provide concrete examples of medical research projects or explain the consequences of private versus public funding in more detail. The argument remains somewhat superficial, and the discussion of 'individuals' as a funding source is largely ignored, meaning the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical. You use basic linking words like 'Therefore' and 'Whereas', but the transitions between sentences are sometimes abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing taxes to the potential for private companies to sell research back to the government lacks a smooth logical progression. Additionally, the use of punctuation is inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing capital letters after periods, which disrupts the reader's ability to follow your argument easily. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the essay feel more unified.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'help', 'study', and 'money'. There is an attempt to use some academic vocabulary, but it is often used incorrectly or in a way that sounds unnatural, such as 'the one will benefit with this is all the citizens'. To improve, you should focus on using more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific terminology related to medical research and public policy, while ensuring that your word choices are accurate and contextually appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'this should financed'), missing articles, and incorrect preposition usage. Punctuation is also a significant area for improvement, as there are several instances where sentences are incorrectly joined or fragmented. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence boundary control and basic grammatical accuracy will significantly improve your score.
