Student answer (Band 5.0)

Usually these days, severl research programs related to medical are sponsored by private industries, due to which many issues are seen. I strongly believe that private companies should be stopped involving in such projects to correct the problem areas like pricing, financial benefits over social betterment and less attention to prevention and side effects.

The major problem that incurs by the private companies for such research is the prices of the products manufactured. Mostly it is seen in the mrket that prices of the medicines rise up with the demand. For example during the time of covid, cost of vacination was touching the sky. The medicine was stocked to sell on the higher prices. Similarly, during the rainy sason rate of dengue and malaria medicines used to go up.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 129 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While the student takes a clear position, the ideas are significantly underdeveloped. The prompt asks for an opinion on whether research should be carried out by private companies, individuals, or the government, but the response focuses almost exclusively on the negative aspects of private funding without exploring the roles of the other two entities or providing a balanced argument. The lack of development and the failure to meet the length requirement severely limit the score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into two short paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is limited due to the brevity of the text. There is some attempt at logical sequencing, such as introducing a problem and then providing an example. However, the use of cohesive devices is very basic and repetitive. For instance, the transition 'Similarly' is used, but the overall structure lacks the sophisticated linking required for higher bands. The paragraphing is present but insufficient to support a well-developed argument, as the ideas are not extended enough to warrant a more complex organizational structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive. The student uses basic terms like 'issues', 'problems', and 'prices'. There are also several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'severl' instead of 'several', 'mrket' instead of 'market', and 'vacination' instead of 'vaccination'. The phrase 'touching the sky' is an informal idiom that is not appropriate for an academic essay. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the presence of spelling errors prevent the response from reaching a higher band. More precise academic vocabulary is needed to discuss complex topics like medical research.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'research programs related to medical' (should be 'medical research'), 'stopped involving in' (should be 'stopped from involving' or 'stopped from being involved'), and 'incurs by the private companies' (should be 'incurred by'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often clunky. The frequency of these errors, combined with the limited range of grammatical structures, indicates that the student struggles to maintain accuracy when attempting to express more complex ideas.
