Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In present days, there are a large number of medical research is being conducted to improve medical science for the betterment of people. And a significant number of them are done by funds given by individiuals and private companies. I believe these researches should be allowed but they should also be monitored by the government.

Due to the advancement of modern science we are getting a huge number of vaccines to prevent diseases that were deadly before. Rather than treating a disease after it attacks a human body it is easier to prevent it. And this has been made possible for the vast opportunities created with a medical team by research conducted in private organizations and by individuals. We have been able to acquire vaccines for epidemics like COVID-19 from organizations that were not government. They work faster as they have a remarkable amount of funds and machineries with world class teams working for them. They are more open towards newer innovations compared to government regulated organizations.

However, I strongly think that they should be monitored by national authorities. The government should be allowed to look over their operations for preventing any type of misconduct. The authorities should immplement a code of conduct to regulate the ways these organizations create medicines and treatments for the public. Because they might not follow proper standards, if these companies have no one to answer so they cause any harm to public.

Moreover, it is quite certain that if only the goverment were to carry out these medical researches there is a chance of corruption as they can not be questioned by anyone. There is also a chance that the taxes would be higher if government did these researches which would result in a strain to the public.

In conclusion, I support the medical research projects done by private organization or even an individual as it's beneficial for people but this does need a government intervention as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies, individuals, and the government in medical research. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the speed of private innovation versus the need for government oversight to prevent corruption or misconduct. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument regarding government corruption is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or elaborate further on the 'code of conduct' you mentioned to demonstrate a deeper exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in your argument. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the start of the second paragraph, 'Due to the advancement of modern science...', is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'epidemics', 'innovations', and 'misconduct' appropriately. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'In present days' (better as 'Nowadays' or 'Currently') and 'machineries' (which is usually an uncountable noun). Your word choice is generally sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise collocations that would be expected at a higher band level. Focusing on learning topic-specific collocations will help improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'a large number of medical research is being conducted' should be 'a large amount of medical research is being conducted' (research is uncountable). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'if these companies have no one to answer so they cause any harm'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and pluralization will be beneficial.
