Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In these days and age, medical research is handled by the multiple private companies, and I think sometimes they are biased to their desired results. In my opinion, all the health and medical related researches should be conducted solely by the governments.
It is observed that many of the private companies are funding the medical research and surveys across the globe. in some regions people reported that sometimes they change the results as per their own desires. For instance in the United States, once alcohol industries were funding the research regarding lungs cancer and other heath related issues. The results of this research declared that alcohol is better for health. After few years these results had been declassified
From my point of view, governments should fund the medical research with a proper note on the results. A medical research decide the lifestyles and consumer behavior of the civilians of a country, so it is the responsibility of a government to fund researches of this kind. Governments should impose tax on the private companies particularly for medical research to raise funds for research instead of giving them rights to conduct it by themselves. When a research is conducted by the government it will have proper note on everything which will give the authentic results not fabricated.
In conclusion, it is better for governments to conduct medical research by themselves so that lives of people could be saved with proper guidance and reports instead of handing them over to private companies for earning high revenues by publishing their desired results.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that governments should be responsible for medical research. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide an example regarding alcohol industries, the argument could be strengthened by exploring why government-led research is inherently more reliable or how it might overcome the funding limitations of private entities. The discussion remains a bit repetitive, focusing heavily on the idea of 'biased results' without fully exploring the counter-arguments or the complexities of the issue. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported point that directly contributes to your overall argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instance' and 'In conclusion', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the problem (private bias) to your proposed solution (government funding). Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your opinions clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'medical research', 'consumer behavior', and 'fabricated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in these days and age' (should be 'in this day and age') and 'proper note on the results'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are natural and precise. Avoiding repetitive phrasing will also help demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' medical research), incorrect verb forms ('a medical research decide'), and punctuation issues (missing capital letters after periods). These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are noticeable. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent use of articles, and refining your control over complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
