Student answer (Band 6.0)

At recent, it is evident that most medical research projects are being financed by private entities. Although according to me, researches in the field of clinical projects needs to carry out not only by privately owned companies but also individuals and government have equal stakes here.

As the advent of modern society, more and more privately owned medical corporations are becoming larger than life. These companies at present don't necessarily depend on findings carried out by individuals or by the government. Most of these companies include a R&D department whose sole job is to carry out research on an already existing therapeutic aspects or for some new strategies. These companies have their own teams of experts and researchers to carry out their necessary analysis. The company finance the projects and use the findings to their greater needs.

On the other hand, governments also tend to allocate their budget into necessary medical explorations. The health ministry, a part of the governmental structure imparts funds into medical inquiries carried out by public medical institutions. To give an example, researches done at ICDDR,B is funded by 55 donor countries, global health foundations, UN agencies, and government core donors. Not only that, individual enthusiasts from different medical colleges and universities also come forward with their theses which is essential to the growth of their careers. These individuals do their research works, sometimes with little to zero financial backups if the necessary equipment are already present at their institutions. Their findings often paves the way for further research which then can be carried out by governmental or private bodies.

So, medical research works should not be only confined to privately owned companies rather they need to be carried out equally by relevant persons having ample knowledge in the medicinal field along with the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear opinion that medical research should be a collaborative effort between private, public, and individual sectors. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of the ICDDR,B. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why individuals are essential to the field could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the discussion of private companies from government and individual contributions. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'To give an example', and 'Not only that' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved for better cohesion. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'therapeutic aspects' and 'medical explorations'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and minor collocation errors, such as 'At recent' (should be 'Recently') and 'imparts funds' (should be 'allocates' or 'provides'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. The student uses a mix of common and some topic-specific vocabulary effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'researches... needs to carry out' (should be 'research... needs to be carried out') and 'The company finance' (should be 'The company finances'). Subject-verb agreement and passive voice usage are inconsistent. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
