IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In this rapidly evolving world, many research projects are funded by private companies. The private companies are primary focusing to fund many medical research programs because of their own good. According o my point of view this research should be provided by government.
These private companies are funding medical research programs because they need their own growth and development, and they also earn some numerous amount of money from the projects. For example, there is a company named colossal who are resurrecting lost species of animal for different purpose. this will result in extended growth of that company and the research will be revolutionary.
However, a predominant reliance on private funding is fraught with perils. Primarily, it skews research priorities towards profitable therapeutic areas, such as lifestyle drugs or chronic conditions prevalent in affluent populations, while neglecting diseases that predominantly affect the poor, like malaria or tuberculosis. This '10/90 gap' – where only 10% of global health research addresses 90% of the disease burden – exemplifies the misallocation of resources when profit, not global need, dictates the agenda. Furthermore, corporate funding can compromise scientific objectivity. Studies funded by industry are more likely to report favorable results for the sponsor's product, as seen in analyses of clinical trials for antidepressants or diabetes medications. This publication bias erodes the integrity of medical evidence and can lead to harmful clinical decisions. Consequently, undiluted privatization undermines the very foundation of equitable and trustworthy healthcare.
In conclusion, while private companies bring efficiency and innovation, their profit-driven nature can distort research priorities and undermine objectivity. Therefore, I strongly believe that the primary responsibility for funding medical research should rest with governments, which are accountable to the public and can prioritize unmet health needs. This does not preclude private collaboration, but it must be carefully regulated and supplemented by individual philanthropy and public-private partnerships to ensure that research remains both pioneering and socially just. Only through such a balanced, government-led approach can we safeguard the integrity and equitable impact of medical science for all humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of government-led research. The ideas are well-developed, particularly in the third paragraph, which provides a sophisticated analysis of the '10/90 gap' and the risks of corporate bias. While the introduction is slightly simplistic and contains minor grammatical errors, the overall argument is coherent and supported by relevant examples. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points and provides a nuanced final stance. The response demonstrates a clear understanding of the complexity of the issue, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, and the transition between the critique of private funding and the concluding recommendation is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to link arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the reader is guided through the argument without confusion. The structure is robust and supports the development of the essay's central thesis.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally strong and appropriate for an academic context. The student uses sophisticated terminology such as 'predominant reliance', 'fraught with perils', 'equitable', and 'publication bias'. These terms demonstrate a good range and precision. While there are minor errors in the introduction (e.g., 'primary focusing to fund' instead of 'primarily focused on funding'), the overall lexical control is impressive. The ability to use topic-specific language accurately contributes significantly to the clarity and authority of the argument presented.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of relative clauses and conditional-like reasoning. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are some minor slips in the introduction, such as 'According o my point of view' (typo) and 'this research should be provided by government' (missing article). However, these are infrequent and do not impede communication. The control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally high, allowing for a smooth reading experience throughout the body paragraphs.
