IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The following topic brings out the question wether the research projects should be funded by the government, individuals or private organisations.

The medical projects can be funded by any organisation or the government that really depends upon the market needs and interests. Basically it's the duty of the government to fund such projects which can be helpful for the betterment of the society. And projects being funded properly by government can assure their strength and them with no lack of any resources and can propose better results.

On the other hand many organisations fund their own projects for their own investment and interests. Most companies organise labs conducts many projects with no hand of government helps them to expand their business, but there is a catch such companies should test their products or results before introducing them to the market and government should keep such companies in check in case they be selling dangerous products in market.

Few years ago special forces raided a medical factory where they were manufacturing medicines with expired ingredients and selling them in the market, there are a lot of cases like this were people publish there own brands and medicines which turned out to be a dangerous for the consumers.

So the government should keep such manufacturers in check and should invest in the medical field, help people in publishing their ideas.

Moral is that medical is a sensitive field which requires care and complete attention cause a simple mistake can affects many families.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of government and private companies in medical research. However, the position is not fully developed. While you mention that the government should fund projects for the betterment of society and that private companies should be regulated, the argument lacks depth. The example provided regarding the 'special forces' raid is a bit anecdotal and lacks a clear connection to the broader debate about funding models. To improve, ensure you clearly state your opinion in the introduction and provide more nuanced reasoning for why one entity might be superior to another, or how they should collaborate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. The transition between the government's role and the private sector's role is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often repetitive or used in a mechanical way (e.g., 'On the other hand', 'So'). The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where 'them' lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'good', 'better', and 'help'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'no hand of government' and 'publishing their ideas' (when referring to medical research). Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday language. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more topic-specific terminology related to medical research, ethics, and economic policy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'wether the research projects should be funded' (spelling), 'can affects many families' (subject-verb agreement), and 'there are a lot of cases like this were people' (incorrect relative pronoun). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and basic sentence construction.
