Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, mostly medical research projects are sponsored by private companies. In my opinion, medical research primarily should be funded and overseen by government and private companies should play a supporting regulated role.

Government research focuses more on public interest whereas private companies focus more on money aspect. Moreover, government medical research solution is affordable for the nations population which helps boost the economy of a country. In addition to that, trust plays an important role in establishment research because agencies are directly answerable to the public. Individual research lacks resources for a proper research that can yield the solution required for a problem which is why individual research requires collaboration with other entities.

In contrast, private companies focus on speedy solution as they have more funds to support fast research for the production of new medicine. A downside of private company funded research is that they might forge or hide the results to launch a product just for profit without public interest in mind. Furthermore, rare diseases and cheap cures are avoided by the companies because their only goal is to maximize companies income which will make it successful.

In my opinion, government and private companies should collaborate and work together to provide the best results possible for a cure. Government should be the body that funds and oversees the research whereas private companies should act as a supporting role. Moreover, individual who posses great research abilities should be on boarded by government and private companies to achieve the best result possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that government should lead medical research while private companies play a supporting role. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the discussion on public trust versus profit motives. However, the development is somewhat brief. While the arguments are clear, they could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points, ensuring the position remains consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the benefits of government research and the risks of private funding. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to that', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, contributing to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'sponsored', 'regulated role', 'public interest', and 'maximize companies income'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, there is a lack of more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would elevate the score. Some phrasing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'research' and 'companies'. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient for the task, and errors in word choice do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'mostly medical research projects' (should be 'most medical research projects'), 'nations population' (missing apostrophe), and 'individual who posses' (should be 'individuals who possess'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede understanding. The student attempts complex structures, but control is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and possessives.
