IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In contemporary society, most of the medicine-related analysis and research is being done by private organisations. Whether medical research should be done by private companies, individuals or the government has become part of a heated debate in the current era. I strongly believe that the government should be the one leading the medical-related research projects and analysis and in this essay, I will discuss reasons and examples to support my viewpoint.

Private companies possess state of the art and cutting edge technology which allows them to produce quality results and this often translates into better and more profound results for the public, however their main concern is the profit being generated from the research and private companies are less likely to focus on research where the monetary gain is less or non-existent. Private companies do not focus on public welfare but the goodwill and the overall growth and expansion of their businesses. For instance, private companies will brand cheap and readily available solutions like Minoxidil and sell them at steep prices in the name of quality to drive profits and increase sales with focused marketing practices.

There have been many luminaries and individuals which have made considerable contributions to the mankind. One of them the notable Alexander Fleming, whose contributions and consistent effort led to the discovery of Penicillin, saving thousands of lives. However, currently there is a massive gap between individual research and private organisations, as individuals often lack the equipment, assets and manpower to contribute significantly to a medical research. Hence, individual research is lagging far behind the government and private organisations.

Government needs to lead the medical research as it is the primary stakeholder in the welfare of the society. The people pay taxes to the government and government can use these taxes to give subsidy to the people, allowing them to buy cheap medicine that would be otherwise inaccessible for the penurious and the needy. Medical research projects done by the government can focus on long-term research which might not have an immediate monetary gain, something that private companies will not consider. A good example would be the invention of Covid-19 Vaccines, where the companies like Pfizer worked with the government in order to make a Vaccine in record time, which saved millions of lives all over the world.

To conclude, I strongly suggest the government to be the beacon and the leader in medical research as that would be the best option for most of the people involved, however a collaborative effort among individuals, private companies and the government would be the ideal scenario for everyone, producing tremendous benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of government-led research. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between profit-driven private research and public-welfare-focused government initiatives. The example of the Covid-19 vaccine is effectively used to illustrate the potential for collaboration. While the argument is strong, the discussion on individual research is slightly less developed compared to the other two sectors. Overall, the response is well-structured and maintains a consistent position throughout, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'however', 'for instance', and 'to conclude' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The referencing is generally clear, although the transition between the individual research paragraph and the government-led research paragraph could be slightly more fluid. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points of view, contributing to the overall clarity of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally precise and appropriate for an academic context. Phrases like 'contemporary society', 'state of the art', 'primary stakeholder', and 'penurious' demonstrate a good range of vocabulary. There are some minor colocation issues, such as 'contributions to the mankind' (should be 'contributions to mankind') and 'suggest the government to be' (should be 'suggest that the government be'). However, these errors do not impede communication and the range is sufficient to convey complex ideas with some flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a high level of accuracy in most sentences, though some minor grammatical slips occur, such as 'One of them the notable Alexander Fleming' (missing 'is') and 'government needs to lead' (should be 'The government'). Punctuation is generally handled well. The control of grammar is strong enough that the reader is never confused, and the variety of structures used is sufficient to support the development of the argument effectively.
