IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Well as far as it is concerned to me, I beleive the government should be responsible for this. They are the head of the country, so each and everything which is required for it, must be handled by the government. How long they will hide behind the private companies.

My first valid reason for my opinion is, a government is formed by political party, different assemblies. So, if the all burden is carried by the private companies, they funds the medical research projects, they hold the burden of money on theirselves. I beleive that's not the right way to run country. By doing this, you are actually making the government carless about the country. This will give rise to corruption, after all they are also collecting the taxes from the public. So what will they do with that money. That's why they need to be responsible for the all requirements of the country. There duty is to fullfil every need of public.

My second opinion on this will be, if the private companies will be responsilble for all medical research projects, then what will be the role of government in country. It is evident that, if any thing like this happens, then it will detrimental for the system, it will make the system corrupt. A proper system needs to be established in order to run a country, to make it's economy better, to takecare of public, to make life easy for every individual living in the country and this can all happens by a responsible system.

In conclusion, no matter what, whatever it takes government is responsilble and they should contribute in every sector of country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the government should fund medical research. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The arguments focus heavily on general government responsibility and corruption rather than exploring the specific nuances of medical research funding, such as the role of private innovation versus public interest. The ideas are somewhat under-developed, relying on broad assertions like 'they need to be responsible for the all requirements of the country' without providing concrete examples or a balanced discussion of why private funding might be problematic or beneficial. To improve, you should provide specific examples of medical research scenarios to support your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often circular and lacks logical flow. While there are some cohesive devices used, such as 'My first valid reason' and 'In conclusion', they are used in a somewhat mechanical way. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'each and everything which is required for it', where the antecedent is vague. The transition between the idea of government responsibility and the issue of corruption is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, distinct focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic phrasing. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'hold the burden of money on theirselves' (themselves) and 'making the government carless' (careless). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, you should work on using more academic collocations and precise terminology related to economics and public policy, such as 'state-funded initiatives', 'fiscal responsibility', or 'private sector investment', rather than repeating general terms like 'system' or 'country'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'they funds the medical research'), article usage (e.g., 'the all burden'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'this can all happens'). The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple or slightly flawed complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms, and practicing the use of complex structures like relative clauses or conditional sentences without making errors.
