Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 152 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you state a position—that the government should fund medical research—the argument is underdeveloped and lacks the depth required for an academic essay. You mention COVID-19 as an example, but the explanation is repetitive and lacks a broader discussion of the roles of private companies or individuals as requested by the prompt. To improve, you must expand your arguments, provide more diverse examples, and ensure you address all parts of the prompt with sufficient detail to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. It consists of a single, short paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices; sentences are often linked by simple conjunctions like 'and' or 'because' at the start of sentences, which is stylistically weak. To improve, you should organize your essay into clear paragraphs: an introduction, body paragraphs with distinct points, and a conclusion. Use a wider variety of linking words and transition signals (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to connect your ideas logically and improve the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'do their best' and 'take steps' are used multiple times, which reduces the sophistication of your writing. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'government will fund the medical research then government is free to take steps'. You need to incorporate a broader range of academic vocabulary related to research, funding, and public policy. Focus on learning collocations and using more precise terminology to express your ideas more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('Many of private companies funded' instead of 'Many private companies fund'), missing articles, and awkward sentence structures. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, as most sentences are simple or contain basic errors in subject-verb agreement. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct article usage and verb tense consistency. Once these are solid, practice combining simple sentences into complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
