IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
To perform any research, the person should have many resources, funds, space and permissions. The most important thing for a someone to work on any research project are funds, either from any private institution or government bodies. The research projects are only funded by the people who find it as beneficial, imperative or innovative. The researcher have to convince people to provide them with financial support and other resources.
The Government usually does not fund many of the medical projects as they may find it useless, or illogical or simply a waste of money. They only fund the projects that actually have chances to bring positive development. The Government may also not fund the medical research projects that are on small scale or doesn't bring significant changes to health.
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies, for their own benifits. As the researcher's idea has the ability to make profits for the company, their company in return will help them with financial resources. After getting success in the medical research projects, the companies can use them privately to treat patients, and ultimately gaining profits.
Some individuals may not have much financial background to bring funds for the medical research projects and so, they find it difficult to fund these projects, as they require huge amount of finances.
I consider that the medical research projects should be funded by government sector. As I presume that if these medical research projects brings positive change in the healthcare sector, then the technology should reach everyone, as the government have the ability to make it accessible for all. In this way, huge amount of people can achieve better and latest treatments after the success of the medical projects, so I prefer government over private funds so betterment of all.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies, individuals, and the government in funding medical research. You clearly state your position in the final paragraph, favouring government funding. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why individuals struggle to fund research is brief, and the argument for government funding could be strengthened with more specific examples or a deeper exploration of the 'public good' versus 'profit motive' tension. While the task is addressed, the arguments remain at a general level rather than being fully extended.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the general requirements of research to the specific roles of different funding bodies. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive (e.g., 'The Government', 'The research projects'). While the paragraphing is appropriate, the transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow of the argument. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the range of linking words is somewhat limited.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'imperative', 'innovative', and 'accessible'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'gain profits' (should be 'generate profits') and 'huge amount of people' (should be 'large number of people'). Spelling errors like 'benifits' also occur. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use less common lexical items more precisely and ensure that collocations are natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The researcher have to', 'the government have the ability') and article usage (e.g., 'the medical research projects that are on small scale'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate better control. The errors present do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
