IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is stated that many medical research projects are funded by private companies these days. In my opinion, both private companies and the government should conduct medical research, as their involvement can promote medical innovation while ensuring that the healthcare needs of the wider population are addressed.
Basically, private companies can easily conduct various medical researches, such as introduction to new medicines, drugs, vaccines, causes of new diseases and ways to prevent diseases. As, private firms have substantial financial resources, advanced technology and strong incentives to develop new machines and treatments they can work very easily. Moreover, they may have a large number of employees in many big research companies which is also significant in fostering the research work. For example, having a large number of employees with diverse expertise can generate a wide range of ideas and innovative thinking, which can help researchers develop advanced medical technologies and effective treatments for various emerging diseases.
Nevertheless, medical research should not be the sole responsibility of private companies, as governments can also make valuable contributions. The primary objective of the government medical investigation is to protect public health rather than generating profits. This allows governments to focus on diseases and treatments that may not be financially attractive to private companies. For example, government-funded researchers can investigate rare diseases that affect relatively small numbers of people, even when developing treatments for them may not be commercially profitable. As a result, government involvement can ensure that medical advances benefit a wider section of society, including people who might otherwise receive little attention from private companies.
In conclusion, although private companies can contribute significantly to medical research through their financial resources and technological expertise, I believe that governments should also play an active role. A combination of private-sector and government involvement can promote medical innovation while ensuring that public health remains a priority.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that both private companies and the government should be involved in medical research. The ideas are well-developed, with the first body paragraph focusing on the resources and innovation provided by private firms, and the second body paragraph highlighting the government's role in public health and rare diseases. The arguments are logical and supported by relevant examples. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points. The response fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Nevertheless', 'For example', and 'As a result' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different perspectives. The flow of the text is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise. The student uses academic collocations such as 'substantial financial resources', 'diverse expertise', and 'commercially profitable'. While the range is adequate for the task, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication. The use of vocabulary is consistent with the formal tone required for an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although private companies can contribute... I believe that...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is generally accurate. There are very occasional minor slips, such as the phrasing 'introduction to new medicines' (which could be 'the introduction of new medicines') and the slightly awkward 'government medical investigation'. However, these do not interfere with the clarity of the message. The control of grammar is strong throughout the response.
