Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In contemporary society, medical research projects are funded by private companies. In my view, research should be carried by the government because they will be able to promote equality among the citizens. and create more opportunities.

The primary reason as to why I support this view is governments may promote equality among the citizens. They may choose qualified researchers from every region within the country, which may make individuals feel equal. Consider the Kenya Educational Medical Research company which is owned by the Kenyan government. If they select qualified individuals for research project through an interview while considering all the regions, people will feel they have the same opportunities.

Another significant advantage of allowing the government to carry research projects is that it creates more job opportunities to citizens. While private companies and individuals may have conflict of interests of biasness in terms of job opportunities. governments are controlled by rules and regulations which may not allow them to be bias. For instance, when a constitution states that there should be a gender equality in the paliamentary seats, citizens will have

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 181 words long. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the essay ends abruptly mid-sentence. While you have a clear position, the arguments are under-developed and lack the necessary depth required for an Academic Task 2 essay. To improve, you must expand on your points with more detailed explanations and examples, and ensure you complete your thoughts. The current length prevents a full exploration of the topic, leading to a lower score for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the abrupt ending disrupts the overall flow. You use some cohesive devices like 'The primary reason' and 'Another significant advantage', which helps the reader follow your logic. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear concluding sentence and that your ideas are fully linked to the main prompt. The lack of a conclusion or a fully developed final paragraph makes the overall structure feel unfinished and disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision needed for a higher band. You use some relevant terms like 'contemporary society' and 'qualified researchers', but there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'conflict of interests of biasness'. The word 'biasness' is non-standard; 'bias' or 'partiality' would be more appropriate. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive structures. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms will help you express your ideas with greater clarity and impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'research should be carried by' should be 'carried out by', and 'there should be a gender equality in the paliamentary seats' contains a spelling error ('paliamentary') and an unnecessary article. Additionally, there are sentence fragments, such as 'and create more opportunities' starting a new sentence. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and proofreading for basic spelling and punctuation errors. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy is essential for a higher score.
