IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary society, medical research projects are funded by private companies. In my view, research should be carried by the government because they may be able to promote equality among the citizens and the availability of resources.

The primary reason as to why I support this view is governments may promote equality among citizens. They may choose qualified researchers from every region within their country, which may make the people to feel they have the same opportunities. Consider the Kenya Educational Medical Research company, which is owned by the Kenyan government. If they select qualified individuals for a research project through an interview while considering all the regions, many people will feel they have the same opportunities.

Another significant advantage of allowing the government to carry research projects is that it may have enough resources to fund the project. Most private companies or individuals may have limited funds which might not support the project fully. Although not all governments may have sufficient resources, some may be funded by the developed countries to support their research. For instance, when South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo were facilitating a research on Ebola medicines, The United States of America supported them substantially which helped them complete the project. Therefore, I believe that governments may have better ability to facilitate the medical research fully.

To conclude, although several medical research projects are funded by private companies currently, I believe the government can be a better alternative because it may have more resources and could promote equality among citizens.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that government funding is preferable. The ideas regarding equality and resource availability are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of the Kenya Educational Medical Research company and the collaboration between South Africa, the DRC, and the USA. However, the development is somewhat limited; the argument could be strengthened by exploring why private funding might be problematic or by providing more depth on how government oversight specifically improves research outcomes. The response covers all parts of the task, but the depth of analysis remains at a functional level rather than a fully extended one.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Another significant advantage', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the use of referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical, and the transition between the general argument and the specific examples could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific language like 'facilitating', 'substantially', and 'contemporary society'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'carry research projects' (should be 'conduct' or 'carry out'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning without difficulty, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'research should be carried by' (missing 'out'), 'make the people to feel' (incorrect infinitive usage), and 'facilitating a research' (uncountable noun usage). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally good, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more error-free sentences and greater variety in complex grammatical structures.
