Student answer (Band 6.0)

As far as this topic is concerned, i agree that nowadays a great deal of research are conducted by private companies which generally be consider beneficial while not ignoring the role of government and individuals in this particular sector.

Private companies invest their funds in research projects in order to get financial benefits. Which results in lesser the burden on government financially and allows government to focus on other issues. Private companies are always in competition with their rival companies in research field to obtain the desired research results more efficiently. Its helps in a better outcome which eventually beneficial for overall society.

However, some people argue that government and individuals researchers should take up this initiative in order to keep the fairness in research outcome. Private companies sometimes dictate the overall research project. On the other hand, individuals are more competent to perform better in this field because they are not liable to find out any bias research result.

Government should also regulate research projects that are carried out by private sector in order to keep the authenticity of the projects. Moreover, also provide funds to individual researchers to maintain the balance in this sector. Besides this, government should also launch public private partnership based research facilities to reduce the influence of the private companies on medical research.

In my opinion, individuals approach towards medical research will not be sufficient for modern day requirements of vaccines and drugs. This requires a state of the art laboratories and technologies. For example, in covid nineteen pandemic the demands of vaccines can only be fulfilled by public private sector. Thus, we cannot entirely deny the importance of private companies in medical research.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear opinion that while private funding is beneficial, government oversight and public-private partnerships are necessary. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the example of the COVID-19 pandemic to illustrate the necessity of large-scale resources. However, some arguments, such as the claim that individual researchers are 'more competent' because they are not liable to bias, are slightly under-developed and could have been supported with more specific reasoning. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, and the response effectively balances the different stakeholders mentioned in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the benefits of private funding or the need for government regulation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, contributing to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific terminology like 'public private partnership', 'state of the art', and 'authenticity'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'lesser the burden' (should be 'lessen the burden') and 'bias research result' (should be 'biased research results'). While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, more precise and varied vocabulary would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('research are conducted', 'Its helps') and incorrect verb forms ('be consider'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to suggest that the student does not yet have full control over complex structures. More attention to verb tenses and agreement is needed.
