Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the modern world, most medical research projects are funded by private companies; however, individuals and the government can also carry them out. In my opinion, research should be carried out by governments; there are multiple reasons for this.

The major reason for this choice is that private companies invest in medical research in result, if they cure any disease, they would make it a business and try to make maximum profit from it because they don't bother to help the poor population same as we can say for individual researchers. Only government inventions can be found cheaply, like the COVID vaccine.

Government inventions in medical research are always cost-effective, which demonstrates that not only wealthier sections of society can benefit from findings, but the middle class as well as people below the poverty line can take the same benefit from research. The bias factor is crucial here; governments usually don't distribute anything based on caste category, which is possible in individual and private organisations' projects. Let's understand this with an example of the USA and India. The United States of America is a privatised country, and most of its medical research is done by corporate MNCs; this directly affects the medical bills of individuals. This is the biggest consequence of privatisation of medical care. A USA resident came to India from the USA, and his surgeries were done for under 2m INR; however, in the USA it requires rupees 10 million.

to wrap up, i just want to say that medical research can be done by anyone but it should benefit everyone not only rich that is big point and only thing where govenment g

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of government-funded research. The ideas are relevant, particularly the discussion on profit motives versus public accessibility. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The comparison between the USA and India is a good attempt at supporting the argument with real-world examples, but the conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence. This prevents the essay from fully developing the final summary of the argument. While the position is clear throughout, the lack of a finished conclusion impacts the overall depth of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'in result' or 'same as we can say for'. Additionally, the abrupt ending of the final paragraph disrupts the flow and coherence of the conclusion. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the discussion of profit and the example of the USA could be smoother to improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are attempts to use more sophisticated terms like 'privatised', 'corporate MNCs', and 'cost-effective'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'government inventions' (where 'initiatives' or 'funding' would be more appropriate) and 'take the same benefit' (which is slightly unnatural). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as punctuation issues, missing articles, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'they don't bother to help the poor population same as we can say for individual researchers'). The sentence structure is sometimes repetitive, and there are errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. These errors do not usually impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The incomplete final sentence also affects the overall grammatical control.
