Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, the issue of medical research projects being funded by private companies rather than individuals and government is somewhat a controversial topic and is subject to debate.

I believe that government should be responsible for funding medical research projects.the first reason is that medical research in essential for public health, so its should not be depend on whether the project is entirely profitable or not. Government can fund for researches related to serious diseases. For example, Projects for researching malaria or dengue, government can help marginalised communities for better understanding measures to prevent such disease. Although, this is not profitable for government but it will create a positive impact on society,

In addition, government funded research are seen to be conducted more ethically and safely. Medical experiments are very sensitive and high degree of risk is associated with it. Therefore, strict regulations are necessary to carry such experiments to ensure safety and wellbeing of patients. Government can regularly monitor scientists to ensure that they are following ethical standards.

However, private individuals or companies should also be encouraged to contribute. For example, pharmacies can be used to determine which medicine have better results on patients and which medicine have little or no effects or which type of medicine is needed for a specific condition. As a result, this will help researches to develop new medicines quickly.

In conclusion, I agree that government should be funding for medical projects as there primary motive is wellbeing of public not profit. Nevertheless, cooperation between private companies and government will be more effective approach

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that government funding should be the priority while acknowledging the role of private entities. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on public health and ethical oversight. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding private companies is a bit vague, focusing on pharmacies rather than the broader scope of private research. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations and perhaps a more nuanced exploration of why private funding might be problematic beyond just profit motives, or how government and private sectors can specifically collaborate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical issues, such as the lack of capitalization at the start of the second paragraph ('the first reason'). Additionally, some transitions are a bit repetitive or simplistic. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother, particularly when moving from the government's role to the potential contribution of private companies.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'marginalised communities', 'ethical standards', and 'cooperation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'its should not be depend' (should not depend) and 'as there primary motive' (as their primary motive). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensure you are using the correct forms of words (e.g., 'researches' is often better expressed as 'research' as an uncountable noun).

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('government funded research are seen'), missing articles ('for researching malaria'), and punctuation errors. Some sentences are also slightly awkward, such as 'is somewhat a controversial topic'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic errors like verb forms, articles, and sentence fragments to improve your accuracy.
