IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, private companies take the financial responsibility of many studies from medical projects. Despite individuals and private organizations are involved in this, in my opinion government should majorly be responsible in carrying out research.

Individuals and non- governmental organizations who involve themselves in research process do so for a number of reasons. Firstly, it helps them to achieve their goals and facilitate the impact they contribute to the society. For instance, pharmaceutical organizations which are non-governmental research on the effects of a particular drug before it is made available to the public, this helps to know the side effects of the medication and also to understand the mechanism of action of the drug. Secondly, individuals engage in the study of a particular disease when there is an outbreak to help curtail the spread and prevent future pandemic of the disease.

However, the government is hope of the society. So, there is a great expectation from the government to be proactive and care for every members of the society. One major reason why the government should be much involved in research is to protect the the health of the people and the government is believed to have more funds and capacity to do this. An example of this is the outbreak of the Covid- 19 virus that affected a lot of countries, the government of those countries affected were greatly involved in the protection of lives by placing a lot of bans and laws during that period, this can only be done by the government. In conclusion, the government should be majorly responsible for the finance of research of any countries so as to place laws and protect the citizens
