IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, medical research are crucial because of increased number of the deiseases and it's need among people. I , personaly prefer that governmnet should take the medical research projects under its control. There are several reasons behind this opinion. Although the private companies and individual had added that vital contribution also.
There are some benefits of private companies funding research. First of all, many companies have a large amount of money, which allows them to buy modern equipment and hire skilled researchers. They can also complete projects faster because they are usually focused on developing new products and services. For example, pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of money on research to create new medicines. However, private companies normally focus on projects that can give them financial benefits. As a result, some important research may not receive enough funding if it is not profitable.
On the other hand, governments can support research that is useful for the whole society. They can provide money for areas such as healthcare, climate change, space exploration and education. Government funding is especially important for research that may take many years to produce results. Individuals can also support research through donations, but they usually do not have enough money or resources to fund large projects.
In my view, research should mainly be funded by governments because they can focus on the needs of society rather than only on making profits. At the same time, private companies and individuals should also be encouraged to contribute when they have the resources to do so.
In conclusion, although private companies and individuals can make useful contributions, I believe that the government should have the greatest responsibility for funding research.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies, individuals, and governments in funding medical research, taking a clear position that governments should take primary responsibility. The writer develops relevant ideas, such as the profit-driven motives of private companies contrasted with the broader societal focus of governments. However, some arguments lack deep extension, and the opening paragraph contains a slight logical flaw by referring to individuals adding contributions while also stating government control is preferred. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed, and the position is clear throughout, which aligns well with the Band 6 or 7 descriptors. Because the ideas are relevant and well-supported in body paragraphs, a score of 6.5 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is coherent overall with a clear logical progression. The writer uses standard paragraphing, introducing the topic and stance in the first paragraph, discussing private companies and governments in the body, and concluding clearly. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'However', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader, although some referencing and transitional phrasing are a bit mechanical ('Although the private companies and individual had added that vital contribution also'). Overall, the logical organization is clear, satisfying the Band 6 descriptors effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, incorporating terms like 'pharmaceutical companies', 'financial benefits', and 'space exploration'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'deiseases' instead of diseases, 'personaly' instead of personally, and awkward word forms like 'individual had added that vital contribution'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some inaccuracy, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 category where lexical resource is adequate for the task despite some errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and concessive structures ('Although the private companies and individual had added...', 'which allows them to buy modern equipment'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('medical research are crucial', 'private companies and individual had added'), and minor punctuation or article slips. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the error-free sentence frequency, making a Band 6 score the most accurate fit.
