Student answer (Band 5.0)

Companies emphasize that their products are new, the main reason is that people want to buy new models of a product every year. Actually a certain group of people is demanding new models of a product because they get bored with one type of product. People also want to have sense of achievement, they want to show off to others. Companies also want to remain in market and competition with other companies. Companies do not want people to forget them. Companies want to realize their importance to  a certain group of people. Companies claim that their prodcuts are new because they also have to show off it in their advertisements through social media. Most companies only change colours and size creates curiousity among people. People eager to buy those products. For instance, many companies are introducing thier models every year, most often it is demand from their customers e.g; iPhone, Samsung etc.

In my perspective this is a negative development. If a company is not willing to introduce a new product or a new model, company should not do it. Launching a new product which is not a high quality and its price is also too much high. Such kind of practices reduce the significance of a product. Most of the people will buy a product for one time but again they will not be interested in it anymore. So, claiming a product as new only can be beneficial, if it is containing some extra-ordinary specifications. For example, Honda company introduce their model of motorycycle every year, which does not have good modifications as a result, it has failed to win trust of their customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response struggles to address the prompt fully. The task specifically asks whether medical research should be carried out by private companies, individuals, or the government. However, the student's text largely discusses consumer products, marketing strategies, and the tech and automotive industries (mentioning iPhones, Samsung, and Honda motorcycles), rather than focusing on medical research. While the writer attempts to take a position by stating 'this is a negative development', the arguments are largely disconnected from the actual topic of medical research funding. Consequently, the ideas are under-developed in relation to the specific prompt requirements, resulting in a score of 4.0 according to the band descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is divided into two paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall coherence are hindered by the lack of clear topic relevance. While basic cohesive devices and punctuation are attempted, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as abrupt shifts between sentences describing corporate motives and consumer behavior (e.g., 'Companies emphasize that their products are new, the main reason is that...'). Paragraphing is also insufficient since the entire discussion of commercial product launches is lumped together without clear separation of ideas. Overall arrangement shows some basic organisational structure, but cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. This places the response firmly at a band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying heavily on words like 'companies', 'products', and 'new' throughout the text. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'price is also too much high', 'creates curiousity', and 'introduce their model of motorycycle every year'. The range of vocabulary is limited to everyday commercial topics, and attempts to use less common items are either inaccurate or inappropriate for an academic essay. While the meaning can generally be inferred, the errors and restricted vocabulary span reflect a band 5.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object constructions. There are frequent grammatical errors, including run-on sentences and comma splices (e.g., 'Companies emphasize that their products are new, the main reason is that...'), incorrect verb forms ('Honda company introduce their model'), and missing prepositions or articles. Attempts at more complex clauses often result in faulty grammar that can cause some difficulty for the reader. These frequent structural errors and limited flexibility correspond to a band 5.0.
