Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, finishing at 240 words, which negatively impacts Task Achievement. Furthermore, the response only partially addresses the prompt. While the student touches upon the role of private companies and the government in funding medical research, the ideas are severely underdeveloped, highly disjointed, and lack a clear, coherent position throughout the essay. The arguments presented regarding public ideas and funding timelines are confusing and difficult to follow, making it hard to discern a structured reasoning process. Consequently, the response does not adequately weigh whether research should be carried out by private companies, individuals, or the government, leading to a weak overall development of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organization and progression of ideas are severely impaired throughout the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs is broken, resulting in a lack of overall coherence. For instance, transitions like 'To begin with the information in to' and 'There for' are confusing and fail to link ideas effectively. Referencing is frequently unclear or absent, leaving pronouns without clear antecedents. Cohesive devices are either misused or inadequate, making the text jump erratically between points about government funding, company rules, and health problems. Paragraph breaks are also used improperly, as seen with the incomplete sentence ending the essay abruptly at 'The canclu'.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily restricted. The student frequently misuses words and collocations, such as 'funed' instead of funded, 'depand' instead of depend, and 'batter result' instead of better result. There is a lack of control over word formation and spelling, with errors occurring in almost every sentence (e.g., 'ingridiants', 'tablates', 'maicine', 'helth'). The lexical range is inadequate for discussing a complex topic like medical research funding, and these persistent errors strain the reader and frequently impede understanding of the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of poorly constructed simple and attempted complex sentences that are heavily flawed. There is a complete lack of control over basic sentence structure, verb tenses, and prepositions, demonstrated by ungrammatical phrasing such as 'much person survive the funds' and 'when ever the Government position is usefull also, but time not fix'. Punctuation is also problematic, contributing to run-on thoughts and fragmented ideas. Errors are pervasive and severe throughout the text, frequently distorting meaning and causing significant difficulty for the reader.
