Grammatical Range and Accuracy4.0
Overall4.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding who should fund medical research, leaning towards government funding while acknowledging private companies. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The introduction spends too much time defining medical research rather than outlining a clear position. In the body paragraphs, points are asserted rather than fully extended, such as the vague mentions of government benefits and private company responsibility. While the writer covers parts of the task, the reasoning lacks depth and clarity, resulting in a superficial treatment of a complex topic. This places the performance firmly at Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, overall progression is weak. Paragraphs lack internal cohesion, and the connections between sentences are often abrupt or confusing, such as the transition in the second paragraph from government strategies to researcher benefits. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, with repetitive structures like 'Research done by private companies' and 'Government companies'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it hard for the reader to follow the logical flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the conclusion is merely a single incomplete sentence. This meets the criteria for Band 4.5, rounded to Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The lexical resource is limited and repetitive throughout the essay. The writer frequently reuses basic terms such as 'research', 'medical', 'government', and 'companies' without employing synonyms or varied phrasing. There are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'government companies' instead of government agencies, 'payed alot' (spelling and grammar), and 'great full impact' instead of significant impact. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic topic, noticeable errors in spelling, morphology, and word formation cause frequent difficulty for the reader and prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is restricted, consisting primarily of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex structures. Frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure impede communication. Examples include run-on sentences and fragments, such as 'Due to advancement of knowledge everything is done by evidence based' and 'To many government companies and employees work great on doing research and make a health care system advance.' Subject-verb agreement errors, missing prepositions, and incorrect verb forms ('payed', 'researcher's') are pervasive. Because errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, the writing aligns with Band 4.0.
