Student answer (Band 6.0)

In modern era, medical research projects are important and increasing drastically. These days, various medical research projects are funded by private companies. I believe that research should be carried out by governments, private companies and individuals. This essay will discuss the reasons in the following paragraphs.

There are many reasons to support my opinion. The first and foremost reason is that maintaining public health is one of the most important responsibilities of the government. Therefore, the government should give some funds for medical research projects. In addition, the government should collect taxes from their citizens so that their responsibility is to ensure that their citizen are more healthy and safe.

Another major reason is that private companies also help the government, therefore, the government should complete large and lengthy projects. Furthermore, private companies and individuals also help to find some rare diseases and their treatment. On the other hand, it is also important to understand that the government cannot manage every responsibility alone. Private organisations and individuals can share this responsibility by providing financial support and some services. As a result, cooperation between the government and the private sector can help to provide better facilities to the public.

In conclusion, I believe that the government should implement some rules and policies for medical research and both sectors should work together on medical research projects. This cooperation can help improve the health care system and contribute to the overall development of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of governments, private companies, and individuals in medical research. However, the position is somewhat split and lacks deep development, as the ideas remain quite general without specific examples to support them. Furthermore, the response contains 242 words, failing to meet the minimum requirement of 250 words. This under-length penalty negatively impacts the overall task achievement score. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their arguments with concrete examples and ensure the word count exceeds the 250-word threshold.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into four paragraphs with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, the logical progression between sentences is sometimes mechanical and repetitive. For instance, the transition 'Another major reason is that private companies also help the government' lacks smooth integration with the surrounding ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, but referencing within sentences can be slightly unclear at times.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, using terms such as 'medical research projects', 'public health', and 'financial support'. However, the vocabulary is often repetitive ('government', 'private companies', 'important'), and there are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'ensure that their citizen are more healthy' instead of 'healthier'. Less common lexical items are attempted but lack precision and stylistic appropriateness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Maintaining public health is one of the most important responsibilities of the government.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'In modern era' (missing article), 'their responsibility is to ensure that their citizen are' (singular/plural agreement error), and 'give some funds' instead of 'allocate funding'. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, and the sentence structures are generally understandable.
