IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent days many medical research projects are funded by private carporations.In my opinion, medical research shulud mainy be funded and controlled bt the gorvernment, rather than private companies or individuals.

private companies have money,but their main goal is profit.This can create serious conflict of interest. For example, apharmaceutical company might only research diseases that make money ,like cosmetic treatments or lifestyledurgs,and ignore rare diseases that affect the poor people. Moreover, companies may hide negative results of their research to sell rheir medicine.This is dangerous for public health.therefore research drivien by profit can not be trusted.

Government-funded research is more reliable and fair .the government purpose is to serve the public,not to earn money .it can spend money on research that is important for spceity,even if it is not profitable.For instance,during the COVID-19 pandemic government arount the world funded research for vaccinesand made them affordable for everyone .Also government can make research results free and open for all scientists and hospitals .Individuals . in contrast, usually do not have enough money , laboratories or teams to carry out large medical projects alone .

Ofcourse ,private companies can still play a supporting role.They have advanced technology and skilled researchers.The best system is collaboration where the government leadsand sets ethical rules,and private companies providetechnology and extra funding under strict supervision.

In my conclusion, while private funding can help,medical research should be primarily the responsibility of the government because it ensure that research is ethical, unbiased and focused on the needs of all people, not just on making profits.
