IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Recently, private companies are funding various medical research projects. Many people believe that these research should by carried out by private organizations or individuals while some contend that government should carry out these projects. I agree with the latter sentiment because i believe medical research projects are very crucial for the medical sector of the nation and should be carried out with proper care.

First and foremost, the authorities are more trustworthy for the residents as compared to any private companies or individuals. People do not normally support and believe any uncertified information especially when it is related to health. Due to which, they feel more relieved and secure to trust the government of the country rather than some unknown organizations. For example, people trust information brodcasting in the television by the government then from any uncertified page on the internet.

In addition to this, the research done by the government is more certified and can be circulated throughout the nation. This is mainly because there are not any benefits for the government to provide misleading information. This is the not case for private organizations or individuals as they can manipulate the research project as per their liking and personal gains. For instance, private corporations can provide uncomfirmed information if they did not complete their research in time.

To conclude, i agree with the people who believe that all the medical research projects should be carried out by the authorities because they are mostly trusted by the residents of the country and their research's findings are more certified and safe as compared to pricate companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing who should fund medical research and clearly stating a position in favour of government-led research. The main ideas, such as public trust and the elimination of corporate bias, are relevant and extended with examples like government television broadcasting versus internet sources. However, the development of ideas tends to be slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on the concepts of trustworthiness and misleading information without exploring wider economic or ethical implications. This places the response comfortably in Band 6.0, as it addresses the task adequately and puts forward a clear, albeit somewhat limited, set of supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to link arguments, such as 'First and foremost' and 'In addition to this', although referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Due to which' at the beginning of a sentence is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Additionally, some pronoun referencing is slightly vague. Overall, the logical progression is clear enough to satisfy the requirements for Band 6.0, where cohesion is generally present even if minor faults exist.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'medical research projects', 'private organizations', and 'manipulate'. However, there are noticeable word choice and spelling errors throughout the response, such as 'brodcasting' instead of 'broadcasting', 'uncomfirmed' instead of 'unconfirmed', and 'pricate' instead of 'private'. Furthermore, the phrase 'this is the not case' contains a collocation/grammar slip. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, aligning with Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples include subordinate clauses like 'especially when it is related to health'. However, there are several persistent grammatical and punctuation errors, including lower-case 'i' pronouns ('i agree', 'i believe'), subject-verb agreement issues ('these research should by carried'), and awkward prepositional usage ('trust the government... rather than some unknown organizations' and 'information on the television by the government then from any uncertified page'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a Band 7.0. A score of 6.0 accurately reflects a mix of error-free simple structures alongside frequent errors in complex attempts.
