Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is severely underdeveloped and significantly falls short of the minimum 250-word requirement, stopping abruptly at 138 words. Because of this drastic under-length, the task cannot be fully addressed or adequately developed, which severely impacts the score for this criterion. The student mentions important concepts like medical research and government funding, but the ideas are cut short, and the specific prompt regarding whether private companies, individuals, or governments should carry out research is not fully resolved. There is a general lack of extended support and examples. According to the band descriptors, a response that fails to develop the task adequately due to severe length constraints cannot achieve a passing score for task achievement. Consequently, the score reflects this incomplete development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text demonstrates some basic organisational structure, attempting an introduction and body paragraphs. However, the overall progression is abruptly halted as the essay remains incomplete, ending with a dangling conjunction ('Hence,'). Cohesive devices are minimal and basic, such as 'Although' and 'For instance'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical or abrupt. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the opening sentence where 'these are fundamantal rights' lacks a clear antecedent. While the writing shows some logical grouping of sentences, the lack of a conclusion and the unfinished nature of the text prevent the response from achieving higher coherence descriptors. Overall, the structural framework is too fragile to warrant a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive. The student attempts some less common words, such as 'fundamantal' (misspelled), 'debateable', and 'contemporary socities', but these are marred by spelling errors and inaccurate word choice. Collocations are sometimes awkward, such as 'wealthy figure of society' instead of wealthy members of society. There are also notable spelling and typographical mistakes throughout the short text, including 'assisstance' and 'arrangments'. While the lexicon is minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about medical care and government responsibility, the range is restricted and the presence of errors in common and less common vocabulary limits the lexical score to this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty complex attempts. There are several noticeable grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. For instance, there is a comma splice in the opening sentence: 'Medical facilities are significantly important in any society, these are fundamantal rights...'. Furthermore, sentences lack proper capitalization after periods in places, and the text ends mid-sentence. While simple sentences are sometimes accurate, the frequent errors in more complex constructions and the overall lack of grammatical variety prevent the student from reaching a higher band. However, the errors do not completely obscure the core meaning of the phrases.
