IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, numerous medical research projects are sponsored by private companies.

While some argue that medical studies should be driven by private corporations or independent individuals, others believe that governments should play the primary role in funding and conducting research, though public-private partnerships remain valuable.

On the one hand, private companies possess substantial financial resources and cutting-edge technology, so with the help of private companies, many issues will be resolved if they are funded and the funds are used in a proper way to help and develop the medical field. while there are also cons of it , the private companies mainly focus on their profits so it is the responsibility of governemnt to check and balance the resouces where it used and must be used for the welfare of community in medical field.Governments are uniquely positioned to allocate funds into preventive medicine, public health initiatives, and long-term epidemiological studies that may not generate immediate commercial profits.

Furthermore, independent individuals lack the financial backing and institutional infrastructure required to conduct large-scale clinical trials safely. When healthcare research is spearheaded by the state, medical breakthroughs and discoveries are typically made accessible and affordable to the general public rather than being locked behind expensive corporate patents.

In conclusion, while private companies play a crucial role in fast-tracking commercial drug development, medical research should fundamentally be spearheaded and supported by governments. State-led funding guarantees that medical priorities align with societal welfare and that essential healthcare advancements remain accessible to all citizens, regardless of their financial status.
