Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by expressing a clear position supporting government-funded medical research. However, there are significant issues. First, the response is under-length, containing only 217 words against the required 250-word minimum, which heavily penalises the overall Task Achievement score. Furthermore, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. While the writer mentions the government's duty and the profit-driven nature of private institutions, the arguments lack sufficient depth, extension, and clear supporting evidence. For instance, the reference to the USA during the COVID-19 pandemic is muddled and unclear. Because the response falls short of the word count and lacks fully developed supporting points, it corresponds to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organised into paragraphs, featuring basic attempts at an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is limited by choppy sentence structures and abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting a sentence with 'As well as ,' or the disjointed referencing seen in 'Regardless of, they do not care...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion frequently breaks down due to sentence fragments and punctuation errors, making the logical flow difficult to follow at times. This performance aligns well with the Band 5 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and basic. The writer uses words appropriate to the general topic, such as 'medical research', 'government', and 'private institutions', but demonstrates noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation. Examples include 'scientist investigation' instead of 'scientific investigation', 'profit driver' instead of 'profit-driven', and 'medical experience' instead of 'medical experiments'. There are also frequent spelling and typos such as 'insead' and 'thry'. The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to communicate the basic argument, preventing the score from rising above Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, but grammatical control is weak throughout the essay. Frequent errors include subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the government have', 'scientist investigation... come'), missing articles, and incomplete sentences (e.g., 'it is the duty of government to. improve...'). Punctuation and spacing are also problematic, with random spaces before punctuation marks and fragmented sentences. Although simple structures are occasionally correct, the high frequency of intrusive grammatical errors places this response solidly in the Band 5 category.
