Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that medical research should be funded by both governments and private companies. Ideas are introduced and supported with relevant examples, such as referencing the COVID-19 pandemic and diseases like AIDS to illustrate the impact of private and governmental investment. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat generalized and brief. While the task is fully addressed and a clear stance is maintained throughout, the supporting arguments lack deeper elaboration, placing this response firmly in Band 6 according to the task achievement descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Transition phrases are basic or misused, such as 'To began with', 'Further more', and 'i fuonded useful', which detracts from the flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and punctuation errors break up the cohesion within sentences. Progression is discernible, but the mechanical nature of the cohesive devices and organizational lapses limit the score to a Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The student uses an adequate vocabulary range to communicate ideas about medical research, funding, and economic growth. However, there are numerous severe spelling errors throughout the text, including 'beinf', 'compaanies', 'beleve', 'discass', 'mine', 'resons', 'shoud', 'privet', 'investegations', 'becase', 'dur', 'opportunties', 'apeare', 'econome', 'covld19', 'disbeared', 'medican', 'tretment', 'gevoernment', 'lows', 'feald', 'desises', 'ADIES', 'encourg', 'responseblty', and 'invesmnt'. These spelling errors and faulty word choices significantly impede readability and strain the reader, placing the lexical resource score at a Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical and punctuation accuracy is extremely weak. There are frequent sentence boundary errors, such as starting sentences with conjunctions or fragmenting clauses (e.g., 'which can helps the econome growth', 'and as a result new medicines showed up. and the pandamic disbeared quicly'). Subject-verb agreement errors ('research going on', 'government can make lows and this lows lead') and persistent capitalization issues (e.g., lowercase 'i', 'covld19') are pervasive. Errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning, resulting in a Band 4 score.
