IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, a considerable amount of medical research is funded by private companies. Although private organizations can provide significant financial resources and encourage innovation, I believe that governments should take the primary responsibility for medical research, while private companies and individuals should also contribute.

There are several reasons why governments should play the main role in medical research. First of all, governments are more likely to focus on public health rather than financial profit. Some diseases require years of research and may not generate sufficient profits for private companies. For instance, research into rare diseases and preventive healthcare may be neglected if there is little commercial benefit. Government funding can ensure that such important areas continue to receive financial support. Furthermore, governments can establish ethical regulations to make sure that medical experiments are conducted safely and responsibly.

On the other hand, private companies can make a valuable contribution to medical research. They often have access to advanced technology, highly skilled scientists and substantial financial resources. Since these companies expect a financial return, they may have strong incentives to develop new medicines and treatments quickly.

In my view, therefore, medical research should be a joint responsibility rather than being controlled by a single group. Governments should provide stable funding and ensure that research serves the wider public interest, while private companies can contribute investment, technology and innovation. Individuals can support this system through donations and charitable activities.

In conclusion, although private companies and individuals have important roles to play, governments should have the main responsibility for funding and regulating medical research. Cooperation among all three groups is likely to produce better outcomes for society.
