IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often debated that whether the prviate companies should be allowed to fund the medical research projects or governments should do it. In my opinion, governments should fund the the research projects to make the innovation cheaper and more inclusive.

Firstly, medical research is a very senstive topic, leaving it only in the hands of private companies or individuals lead to rigged data and sparsely available innovation. For instance, the private funding leads to dictation of the payers on the scientist that are doing work on that project. Consequently, sceintists are sometimes subjected to pressure to bend the results according to the need of the company. Additonally, when companies when something is invented as a result of that research, it is dealt as the property of that company. As a result that is left upon the intent of companies, if they allow it, or not to share with everyone.

Secondly, governments should sponsor the projects to ensure affordable and widely targeted innovations. It has been seen that companies try to make profit of their research and this leads to unnecessary financial burden on the beneficieries of that research. For example, when a medicine is discovered by a company, it is patented and can be only sold by that sole company. They are free to put any price on that drug that is necessity for many patients. Additionaly, when governments fund research, they have the luxury to fund the projects that are othwerwise ignored because they effect the only small portion of the population. For example very less research is done for the children cancer, as it is not very profitable for companies to invest in it.

In conlcusion, governments shoud carry the weight of research to ensure affordable and everybody focued healthcare.
