Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, The privates companies give large amount of funds in medical research projects. The private companies has the high funding amount and expert researchers but ,y opinion is that government should provide the main fund to the mesical research projects, with supports of private and individuals companies.

There are several reasons why governments should play the leading role. First, medical research is closely related to public health, so governments have a responsibility to ensure that important research is conducted for the benefit of society rather than for profit. For example, research into vaccines, infectious diseases and treatments for rare illnesses may not always be financially attractive to private companies. Government funding can ensure that these areas are not ignored. In addition, public research can be made more accessible to hospitals and patients, particularly in developing countries.

However, private companies and individuals also have an important role to play. Private organisations often have large budgets, advanced technology and highly skilled researchers, which can help medical projects progress quickly. Furthermore, competition between companies can encourage the development of new medicines and treatments. For instance, pharmaceutical companies have invested heavily in developing treatments and vaccines, which has helped bring new medical products to patients. Individuals can also support research through donations and charitable organisations.

In conclusion, although private companies and individuals can make valuable contributions to medical research, I believe governments should provide the main funding. This would help ensure that research focuses not only on commercial opportunities but also on the wider needs of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the roles of private companies, individuals, and governments in funding medical research, taking a clear position that governments should provide the main funding. Ideas are generally well-extended and supported, particularly in the second paragraph where public health responsibilities and rare illnesses are discussed. While the opening paragraph contains some repetitive phrasing and minor mechanical errors, the core arguments presented throughout the body paragraphs are relevant, well-developed, and directly answer the prompt. The response successfully meets all requirements of the task prompt, achieving a solid Band 7 performance for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text is logically organised with a clear overall progression. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction outlines the writer's position, the second paragraph details the arguments for government funding, the third discusses the benefits of private and individual funding, and the conclusion summarises the main points. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'In addition', 'However', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. However, referencing and transitions in the opening paragraph are slightly clunky ('The privates companies give... ,y opinion is that...'), which prevents the cohesion from reaching a higher band. Overall, the essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases such as 'public health', 'financially attractive', 'pharmaceutical companies', and 'commercial opportunities' show that the writer can use topic-specific terminology accurately. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word formations, especially in the opening sentences, such as 'privates companies', 'high funding amount', and 'individuals companies' instead of 'individual companies'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7. The vocabulary used in the body paragraphs is more natural and precise, allowing the writer to convey their ideas effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'research into vaccines... may not always be financially attractive' and 'which has helped bring new medical products to patients.' Control over grammar is generally decent in the body paragraphs, but there are persistent grammatical errors in the introduction, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The private companies has') and punctuation errors (',y opinion'). Articles and pluralisation are occasionally mishandled ('the mesical research projects'). Despite these errors, the complex sentences are mostly understandable and communication is rarely impeded. This fits comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.
