IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's world, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. I completely disagree that research should be carried out by private companies, individuals or government because collaboration of all three will boost the R&D sector and the overall development of a country. Also, this may help in developing more innovative solutions and helps the country to fight against any unexpected pandemic.
Firstly, research carried out by both government and private companies helps to boost the R&D sector of the country. If people from different groups perform research on the same topic, it is more likely to obtain an outcome in a minimum amount of time, which in turn boost the sector. Secondly, this view helps in the overall development of the country because of the different research performed by different groups. For example, if both private companies and the government perform different research, it can help in the development of the country by providing medicines of different diseases.
Additionally, the combination of different groups helps in developing more effective solutions due to collaboration. If private companies, government and individuals work together as a team, they are more likely to develop effective medicines by offering fewer side effects. Furthermore, this helps the country to fight against unexpected pandemics. For instance, if a country is affected by a particular diasease, the private companies and the government can come forward and help to overcome this event.
In conclusion, I completely disagree that research should be carried out by any one particular group because researching together helps in the overall development of the country and can boost the R&D sector of a country. In addition, this view helps in developing effective outcomes and encourages a country to fight against any pandemic.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The candidate presents a clear position throughout the response, arguing that medical research should be a collaborative effort between private companies, individuals, and the government rather than restricted to any single entity. All parts of the prompt are addressed, and main ideas are presented, such as boosting the R&D sector and improving pandemic response preparedness. However, the development of these ideas tends to be somewhat repetitive and lacks specific, well-elaborated real-world examples. Phrases like 'different research performed by different groups' are generalized rather than supported with deep illustration. Nevertheless, the position is maintained and the task is adequately fulfilled, corresponding to a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is coherent overall with a clear logical arrangement, featuring an introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a clear conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are employed to sequence ideas, although their usage can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or formulaic. Pronoun referencing and substitution are generally clear, though occasional repetition of phrases like 'different groups' and 'overall development of the country' slightly impedes the smooth progression of ideas. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'collaboration', 'pandemic', 'innovative solutions', and 'R&D sector'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally coupled with word choice or collocation inaccuracies, such as 'providing medicines of different diseases' instead of 'treatments for various diseases' and a spelling error with 'diasease'. Repetition of basic vocabulary items like 'different' and 'help' limits the lexical score. However, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures ('If people from different groups perform...') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'it is more likely to obtain an outcome' instead of 'an outcome is more likely to be obtained', and 'offering fewer side effects' instead of 'having fewer side effects'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors do occur, they rarely impede communication. The control over grammar represents a solid Band 6.0 performance.
