IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A large number of medical research projects are financially supported by private cooperations these days. But I believe that the government should support such research projects. In this essay, I will explain my viewpoint with reason and examples
Medical research projects, supported by the governing authority, can provide students with a lot of facilities and tools. This is because when a research is associated with such institution, one gets access to a lot of resources and trust from public. For example: medical research projects requires testing and experimentation, for which a lab is required. By being funded by the government, one can use this association to ask for a proper science lab from institutions with proper equipment. Along with this, one can also get people to agree on joining surveys or volunteer as a test subject via a proper process. These perks are very difficult to get if a person is self-funding his research or if he is being financially assisted by a private company.
Furthermore, the financial burden of medical research projects is too much for a student to bear. Private companies can sometimes misuse this vulnerability of students to their advantage. For example, many private coorperations tend to dictate the student's approach and methods to research. Eventhough they are not providing the student with all the resources which governments provides to facilitate their research projects, they still ask for a fifty-fifty recognition. Sometimes, private comapnies can close the funding mid-way, either due to lack of finance or any other prospects. This leaves one with unfinished project, on which both his time and efforts are wasted. Therefore, my perspective is that government should be the authority that should fund such projects.
Overall, medical research projects are quite difficult to do alone. Therefore, in order to provide students with proper funding and facilities, government should be the one to support these projects; not the private companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that the government should fund medical research projects rather than private companies or individuals. The response includes relevant ideas, such as comparing the availability of laboratory facilities, equipment, and ethical oversight under government versus private funding. However, some arguments tend to be slightly generalised and focused specifically on 'students' conducting research rather than researchers or scientists generally. For example, the student writes, 'the financial burden of medical research projects is too much for a student to bear.' While the position is well-maintained throughout, ideas would benefit from broader professional context. Overall, the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, and is assessed here as a solid 6.5 due to the slight narrowing of the scope to students.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response features a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which appropriately structures the argument. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'Furthermore,' 'For example,' and 'Therefore.' Paragraphing is logical, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct sub-theme (facilities/resources and financial vulnerability/private company interference). However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as using 'such institution' or 'one gets access,' which slightly affects the flow. Paragraphing and logical sequencing are clear throughout, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'governing authority,' 'experimentation,' 'vulnerability,' and 'fifty-fifty recognition.' However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from precision, such as 'coorperations' instead of 'corporations' and 'comapnies' instead of 'companies'. Additionally, phrases like 'ask for a proper science lab from institutions' lack natural collocation. While communication is never impeded, these lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips place the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional and dependent clauses such as 'This is because when a research is associated with such institution...' and 'These perks are very difficult to get if a person is self-funding...'. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles and singular/plural agreement, such as 'when a research' (uncountable or missing article), 'medical research projects requires' (subject-verb agreement), and 'Eventhough' (spelling). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, they rarely impede communication. This reflects the characteristics of Band 6.0.
