Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally, as it is severely underdeveloped and incomplete, ending mid-sentence in the second body paragraph. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the student's response contains only 169 words, falling significantly short of the 250-word minimum. While the writer attempts to present an opinion about who should fund medical research, the ideas remain limited, fragmented, and fail to fully address the prompt. To move to a higher band, the student must write a fully developed essay that meets the word count requirement and thoroughly discusses all parts of the prompt with extended and supported ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response exhibits basic organizational flaws and a lack of clear overall progression. Although the writer attempts to use transitional markers such as 'To begin with' and 'In addition', information and ideas are not arranged coherently due to the abrupt ending and disconnected thoughts. Paragraphing is attempted, but the structural integrity of the essay is compromised by the incomplete conclusion and fragmented final sentence. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to ensure logical sequencing throughout, maintain a clear progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion, and manage cohesive devices more effectively without mechanical repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are several word choice, collocation, and spelling errors, such as 'appriciate' instead of 'appreciate', 'patrioatic' instead of 'patriotic', and awkward phrasing like 'private factory' and 'carryout scientific works'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are marred by inaccuracies. To improve in lexical resource, the student must expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to word forms and spelling, and ensure that word choices accurately reflect the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Research works are', 'private factory need'), missing articles, and incorrect prepositions (e.g., 'benefits from carryout'). Sentences often contain structural flaws, and the response ends with an incomplete sentence fragment. To reach a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures with good control, significantly reducing the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
