IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Research projects are an essential part of the medical industry. Currently, many of them are funded by private companies. In my opinion, the government plays a major role in providing financial aid but they are not the only contributors of this cause. I believe private and government both have a substantial impact on strengthening the nation's research facilities.
Medical research builds a strong foundation for numerous discoveries. Hence, it should be funded in substantial amount. For a developed country like the USA keeps enough funds to provide to ongoing projects, which in turn has made it a global hub of the research domain. For developed countries like this, the role of private companies is limited. These companies focus more on their personal profit rather than any other aspect. However, they can be important for providing raw materials or for any other stage of the project.
Private organisations have a crucial role in developing and underdeveloped countries. For instance, in India, the government provides a higher amount of financial support in the fields of security, agriculture, and in banking and insurance policies. In such conditions, funding from the private sectors can help in strengthening research facilities. This support eventually helps researchers and medical scholars to contribute to major scientific breakthroughs.
In summary, Research projects are an essential part of the medical curriculum, and they must be funded to produce major scientific revolutions. Although the government spends a substantial amount on research, additional support by the private sector can boost the speed of projects and help them build a strong overall profile of scientific research of the nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, expressing an opinion on whether medical research should be funded by private companies, individuals, or the government. A clear position is maintained throughout, noting that both the government and private sectors play vital roles depending on the country's economic status. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the distinction between developed nations like the USA and developing nations like India is introduced, but the arguments regarding why private companies focus on personal profit or how they specifically aid developing nations lack deeper elaboration with concrete examples. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide more fully developed explanations and extend supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct context (developed versus developing nations). However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features slight awkwardness in referencing, such as the abrupt transition in 'For a developed country like the USA keeps enough funds...' where phrasing makes the flow slightly bumpy. To improve cohesion further and move up, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between sentences and more seamless integration of cohesive devices without relying on repetitive formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'financial aid', 'scientific breakthroughs', and 'global hub'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'funded in substantial amount' instead of 'funded to a substantial extent' or 'keeps enough funds'. Spelling and word-form control are generally fine, and communication is never impeded. To achieve a higher band, the writer should aim for greater precision in lexical selection and demonstrate more sophisticated collocations and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although the government spends a substantial amount on research, additional support by the private sector can boost the speed of projects...' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement and article issues in 'For a developed country like the USA keeps enough funds' and the awkward coordination 'I believe private and government both have'. These errors are occasional and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher level, the writer should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over grammatical structures and prepositions.
