Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt partially by offering an opinion that government and private companies should both play a role in medical research. However, the position is not always clear or consistently maintained throughout the text. The ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive assertions rather than fully elaborated arguments. For instance, the mention that the government should help people in health departments and provide health cards is underdeveloped, lacking specific explanations of how this directly ties into funding medical research. Similarly, points about private companies using AI tools and identifying diseases are introduced briefly without sufficient elaboration or concrete examples. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to ensure that every main idea is extended with clear, logical explanations and relevant supporting evidence rather than shifting abruptly between disjointed points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization present in the essay, with paragraphs used to separate different aspects of the topic, such as government involvement and private companies. However, there is no clear overall progression from start to finish, and the transitions between sentences feel mechanical and abrupt. Cohesive devices are often inadequate or inaccurate, as seen with transitional phrases like 'Furthermore,' and 'Moreover,' which do not always logically link the preceding ideas to the following ones. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact relationship between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs requires strengthening. To improve, the writer should focus on creating a smoother flow of ideas by using a wider variety of accurate cohesive ties and ensuring that each sentence logically builds upon the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation that frequently cause difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. For example, 'phermautical' contains spelling errors, and terms like 'profite' and 'parternship' are misspelled. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'comptetive research' and 'genetic', but these are affected by incorrect word forms and awkward collocations. Repetition of basic words and phrases, such as 'peolpe', 'medicines', and 'companies', further restricts the lexical range. To achieve a higher standard, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to correct spelling and word formation, and ensure that words are used in appropriate collocations that accurately convey the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, articles, and prepositions, which can cause significant difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'government are play important role', 'Research's are not use purpose', and 'Govt. should be helping for the private companies.' Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent throughout the text, with missing spaces after punctuation marks and incorrect capitalization of common nouns. To progress, the writer needs to practice constructing accurate simple and complex sentences, monitor basic rules of agreement and tense consistency, and reduce the frequency of structural errors that obscure the message.
