Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, and importantly, it fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, coming in significantly short at 194 words. While the writer attempts to present an opinion on whether medical research should be funded by private companies, individuals, or the government, the ideas are limited and under-developed. For example, the assertion that government funding prevents monopolies is stated without sufficient explanation or supporting examples. Furthermore, the position is not always clear, as the introduction suggests funding could come from any source, while the body paragraphs focus heavily on government funding. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop all parts of the prompt, maintain a clear and consistent position throughout, and ensure the word count requirement is fully met with extended, well-supported arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation present in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas within paragraphs feels disjointed, such as abruptly shifting from government lab resources to university health departments and then to the polio vaccine. Cohesive devices are either inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, with basic links like 'because' and 'as' dominating the structure. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical flow of ideas. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should ensure a logical sequencing of ideas across distinct paragraphs, using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect sentences and paragraphs smoothly without mechanical repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'monoply', 'burdon', and 'renowing', but these attempts are marred by noticeable spelling errors ('monopoly', 'burden', 'renowned') and word-form issues ('deseases', 'awarness'). Word choice is frequently basic and repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'research' and 'funded'. These errors and limitations cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the precision of the argument. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate accurate less-common lexical items, and pay closer attention to standard spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('research needs larg funds therfore only government has ability'), article usage ('the current century'), and prepositional phrases. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'monoply,Research needs'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To lift this criterion to the next level, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with good control, significantly reducing the frequency of basic grammatical and punctuation errors.
