IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, medical research is quite expensive. These days private companies are funding lab research projects. I personally believe that this matter should be handled by the government only.
On the one side, government is more suitable for this matter. One primary reason is government remained unbaised with everyone and works for the welfare of the people. Moreover, government can afford the expenses of research work which is quit expensive. In order to arrange the bulk of medicines, only government can handle this pressure, such as at the time of covid-19 pandemic, government controls all the supply of vaccination and succeded in controling the horrible situation.
On the other side, private companies are not trustworthy for medical researches because they work mostly on profit-driven projects. It's more likely to happen that, they may hide the negative results of their research in order to sell their products. For example, many popular private companies made vaccination for covid-19 just to sell it to the rich countries so that they can earn more profit. Moreover, its a huge work which requires a lot of concentration and cost, which is somehow not a piece of cake for private companies. Furthermore, neither private companies nor individual can bear the burden because research projects are financialy demanding.
In conclusion, although private companies are investing a lot in medical research, they are just focusing on their own benefits, whereas government can only handle the pressure and burden of this liability. Lab work is not as easy as pie for both private companies and individuals, only government have the guts and financial stability to handle all the research work in a more effective way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that medical research should be handled by the government. The ideas presented are relevant, such as discussing financial stability and public trust, but some aspects are under-developed or rely on broad generalisations. For instance, the point regarding private companies hiding negative results is introduced but not fully explained with a robust example, as the subsequent COVID-19 vaccination example shifts toward distribution rather than suppressed research data. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to extend and support all main arguments with deeper explanations and more precise supporting details rather than repeating the same core idea about financial burdens.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
There is a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing opposing viewpoints, and a conclusion that restates the writer's stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion is at times mechanical, relying on repetitive transitional markers like 'On the one side', 'On the other side', and 'Moreover' to link sentences and paragraphs. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in sentences like 'its a huge work'. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences without overusing formulaic transition phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their opinion on medical research funding. There are attempts to use less common expressions, such as 'profit-driven projects' and 'financial stability'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'unbaised', 'quit' instead of 'quite', 'vaccination' used as an uncountable or plural noun incorrectly in places, and idiomatic cliches like 'a piece of cake' and 'as easy as pie', which lower the formal register required for an academic essay. Some errors, such as 'financialy', reflect spelling slips that do not impede communication but prevent the score from rising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures with conditional and causal clauses. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('government remain', 'only government have'), missing articles ('at the time of covid-19 pandemic'), incorrect apostrophe usage ('its a huge work'), and capitalization errors in proper nouns. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur regularly throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures and eliminate basic grammatical inaccuracies.
