Student answer (Band 6.0)

Medical research plays a crucial role in improving public health and developing new treatments for disease. Nowadays, a large proportion of research projects are financed by private companies, although some people believe that governments or individuals should take responsibility for this task. In my opinion, while private companies can make valuable contributions, authorities should remain the primary source of funding because they can ensure that research serves the public interest rather than commercial goals.

On the one hand, private companies have several advantages when it comes to medical research. Large pharmaceutical firms often possess substantial financial resources and advanced technology, allowing them to conduct research quickly. For example, many vaccines and life-saving medicines have been developed by private companies investing billions of dollars in scientific innovation. Furthermore, competition among firms can encourage faster discoveries and improvements in medical treatments.

On the another hand, governments usually possess greater financial resources and can support long-term research projects. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many authorities doing research to find out the best solution vaccine to relief from diseases from all over the people. Since some companies aims to make some profit like they invest around 1 billion and earned approximately 20 billions and they are more likely to focus on that diseases that generate high income return's.

Individuals can also contribute through charitable, donations or fundraising campaign's, but their financial capacity is usually limited compared with governments and large corporations. Therefore, support from individuals is valuable and they play a significant role in large-scale funding.

In conclusion, private companies and individuals both have important tole in supporting medical research. Consequently, i believe government should take primary responsibilities because they can guarantee fair, long term and socially beneficiary research that serves who really nedded.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout that governments should remain the primary source of funding for medical research. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the financial capacity of pharmaceutical firms and the public interest focus of state funding. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the paragraph discussing the government's role contains some under-developed and slightly unclear points, such as the phrasing 'many authorities doing research to find out the best solution vaccine to relief from diseases'. The response successfully reaches the threshold for this level by offering a well-supported overview of the debate, yet to move higher, all arguments would need to be equally extended, thoroughly explained, and supported with precise examples rather than generalised statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different perspectives, such as private companies versus government funding. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transitional phrase 'On the another hand' contains a minor error, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the pronoun use in 'support from individuals is valuable and they play a significant role'. While the logical progression is generally maintained throughout the response, cohesive devices are occasionally repetitive or over-used, such as standard transition markers. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between paragraphs and sentences would need to flow more naturally and seamlessly without relying on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'pharmaceutical firms', 'financial resources', and 'charitable donations'. However, noticeable word-choice errors, incorrect word forms, and collocation slips occur throughout the text, including 'best solution vaccine', 'relief from diseases', 'income return's', 'campaign's', and 'tole' instead of role. Furthermore, there are awkward phrasing choices like 'serves who really nedded'. These inaccuracies indicate a limited flexibility in lexical control. While communication is not severely impeded, the presence of these word-choice and word-form errors places the response firmly at this level. To improve, the writer should focus on precise collocations, accurate word morphology, and careful proofreading to eliminate minor spelling and punctuation errors associated with word endings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'while private companies can make valuable contributions' and 'since some companies aims to make some profit'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('companies aims'), missing articles ('i believe government should take primary responsibilities'), and incorrect prepositional usage. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear to the reader. The punctuation is generally functional, though minor apostrophe errors appear in plural forms like 'campaign's'. To reach the next level, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain a higher level of accuracy across more intricate grammatical patterns.
