IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In many countries, private companies are the one who funds most of the medical research prjects. Private companies spend alot of money and time for the specific project that require an immediate response or result. Whereas the government funded projects take alot of time as it have to pass through many procedures and documentations. By contrast individual research projects are not given enough weightage due to uncertanity of mistakes and the bised opinion.
Private companies often work with public sectors and NGOs who are concerned for the environment and public health. Most of projects come under the supervision of private sectors because they want an immediate solution to the problem and want to cure it as soon as possible. As private companies don't waste time on cliche documents, they meet all the deadlines, that is the reason why most of the medical research projects are funded by the private sector.
Moreover government carries alot of research projects but each idea or question needs to get into the system and proceed by the government officers. Untill the research topic or question is not verified by the authoroties, no one can proceed with the project. That causes discouragement and extaustion between the research professionals and eventually they avoid to work with the govenment.
Futhermore, reserach held by the individuals who are mainly university professors, that research is not considered to be more valueable than the companies reseraches. As people find loop holes in it which can be the bised opinion or a practical mistake which is considered to be happen due to lack of supervision.
In conclusion, I think that public companies should carry the medical reserch projects as they have enough funding for the practicals and team work will definiatly speed up the process that can not be achieve by an individual or the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the roles of private companies, governments, and individuals in funding medical research, and clearly states a personal position in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the advantages of private sector funding, such as speed and efficiency, are reasonably well explored, other parts are more limited and under-developed. For example, the discussion surrounding individual researchers is somewhat vague and relies on general assertions about bias and lack of supervision rather than fully supported arguments. To reach a higher band, the response would need to extend and support all ideas more fully, avoiding sweeping generalisations and providing more thorough explanations for why certain funding bodies are preferable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that separates the different funding entities: private companies, government, and individuals. Ideas are generally grouped logically, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each option, and a clear concluding stance. However, cohesion at the sentence level is at times mechanical or faulty. The use of transitional markers like 'Whereas', 'By contrast', and 'Futhermore' feels somewhat rigid or occasionally misused, such as starting a paragraph with 'Futhermore' followed immediately by a discussion of individual researchers. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the concluding sentence where 'public companies' appears to be a slip for private companies based on the earlier arguments. Improving the seamless integration of cohesive devices would elevate this aspect.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to the topic such as 'bised opinion', 'supervision', and 'verification'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including frequent misspellings ('prjects', 'alot', 'uncertanity', 'bised', 'extaustion', 'authoroties', 'valueable', 'reseraches', 'definiatly', 'achieve'), as well as occasional awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'cliche documents' or 'carry the medical reserch projects'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly and restrict the score. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their control of less common vocabulary, improving spelling accuracy, and ensuring that words are used in precise, natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures with relative clauses and subordinate conjunctions. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause some difficulty for the reader. Issues include subject-verb agreement problems ('private companies are the one who funds', 'government funded projects... as it have', 'each idea... needs to get... and proceed'), missing or incorrect articles ('carry alot of research projects', 'be more valueable than the companies reseraches'), and prepositions inside grammatical patterns ('avoid to work'). Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also occur, such as comma splices or run-on ideas. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
