Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the contemporay era, scientists are working to address and find solution to the problems related to the field of medicine . A significant prevalence in the privately funded research project has been observed. I believe it should be incumbent upon government to provide aid to the projects that aim to find innovative solutions to the ubiquitous medical issues.
With the considerable rise in number of diseases and significant increase in antimicrobial resistance, it has become crucial to address these issues. When governemnt rejects to fund research related to these diseases, private medicine companies or NGOs provide aid to conduct researches to benefit patients. For instance, in USA most of the well known R1 universities carry out reasearch on grants provides by NIH. Recently federal government has cut the grants to half . And researchers are facing huge problems so they ask private companies to fund their projects. I believe goverenment should be responsible to provide funding.
As the research is conducted to find solutions to the ongoing health related issues or potential treatments to the diseases, government should provide full assistance and grants for such projects. These projects are solely for the nation and its people, so state should fix a budget for these indispensable research projects. As public pay a sizeable amount of taxes every year, government ought to be responsible to work for the betterment of medical facilities and research. When pharmaceutical companies invest in research projects and develop drugs that could be useful, but they patent those drugs and public has to face the consequences.
In conclusion, in this era when people are facing disastareous pandemics like corona virus disease, it is very crucial to find solutions and prepare for the upcoming pandemics. Although private companies provide grants for research for such projects, i believe it is resposibility of the government to fund medical research projects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, arguing that the government should be primarily responsible for funding medical research. However, while the main arguments are relevant, some ideas are under-developed or rely on general assertions rather than thorough extension. For instance, the mention of the US university grants and NIH funding provides a relevant example, but its connection to the overall argument is rushed and lacks full exploration. Similarly, the point regarding pharmaceutical companies patenting drugs and the public facing consequences is introduced late in the third paragraph without being fully tied back to the main thesis. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend and support all main ideas with deeper explanations and more fully developed examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas across paragraphs. Each paragraph has a discernible focus, moving from the introduction and background of the issue to arguments regarding taxation, public welfare, and a concluding summary. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For example, transition phrases and referencing are occasionally abrupt, such as the sudden shift in the second paragraph ('When governemnt rejects to fund...') and the repetitive use of simple transitional links. Paragraphing is used adequately, but internal cohesion within paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without relying on repetitive formulas, ensuring seamless transitions between sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's opinions on medical research funding. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'ubiquitous', 'antimicrobial resistance', and 'indispensable', showing an awareness of topic-specific terminology. However, there are some noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'contemporay' instead of contemporary, 'governemnt', 'researches' (as an uncountable noun), and 'disastareous'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To advance further, the writer needs to increase precision in word choice and eliminate spelling inaccuracies while using less common lexical items more naturally and consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as subordinate clauses ('When pharmaceutical companies invest...', 'Although private companies provide grants...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing articles ('in USA', 'public pay', 'is resposibility'), minor preposition errors, and punctuation slips around introductory clauses. Fortunately, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without difficulty. To reach the next level, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater frequency and accuracy, ensuring that grammatical control is maintained even when constructing longer, more intricate sentences.
