Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing why private companies fund medical research and offering a personal opinion that governments should take charge. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the point about funding poor students to make them work for the company is somewhat tangential and lacks clear elaboration regarding the broader prompt of who should fund research. The position is stated at the beginning and conclusion, but the supporting arguments lack depth and tend to generalise without sufficient explanation. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present fully developed ideas with extended explanations and maintain a clear, consistent focus throughout all body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. There is a discernible logical flow, moving from private funding motives to international relations, and finally to the writer's conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on basic transitional phrases such as "Moving further," "For example," and "To conclusion." Referencing and substitution are occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun shifts and abrupt transitions between ideas. To progress, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother progression between sentences and paragraphs without relying on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and issues with word formation, spelling, and collocation throughout the text, such as "science researchs" instead of scientific research, "finiancial purpose," "unhealth," "medican," and "nutricians." While the writer attempts to use less common items like "clinical trial" and "economic growth," frequent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, learn correct word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and precise word choice to ensure smooth and accurate communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and attempts at complex structures that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as "I will be discussed both the points," "companies funded into medical research," "many nations are try," and "it effect economic." Punctuation and prepositional usage within grammatical patterns also show persistent inaccuracy, which can cause strain for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer needs to increase control over complex sentence patterns, ensure correct verb agreement and tense consistency, and reduce basic grammatical slips.
