Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the minimum length requirement, containing 219 words instead of the required 250 words. While the writer manages to express a position that both private companies and the government should fund medical research, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion regarding why individuals should not pay relies on simplistic reasoning without adequate extension, and the final paragraph trails off unfinished at the end, leaving the argument incomplete. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand on all parts of the prompt with fully developed explanations and maintain a complete, cohesive discussion that meets the word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation with attempts to structure the response into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas throughout the text. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the repetitive use of 'These reseaches' and 'For instance' to link sentences. Paragraphing is also disrupted, with the final paragraph breaking off abruptly in the middle of a sentence. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical flow from one point to the next. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one with a clear, complete structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited in range, though minimally adequate to convey the basic message. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'reseach' instead of research, 'firm believe' instead of belief, 'academikc' instead of academic, and 'gool deal' instead of good deal. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'reputation' and 'beneficial', but inaccurate collocations and persistent spelling mistakes restrict the score. To progress further, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, learn correct word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and contextual usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting complex forms. There are numerous mistakes in verb forms, tenses, article usage, and plurals, such as 'considerable number' missing an article, 'every states' featuring plural instead of singular, and 'reseach programm went successful'. Additionally, punctuation and prepositional patterns inside phrases show frequent inaccuracies that can cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy, ensuring proper subject-verb agreement and fewer basic grammatical errors.
