Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is commonly believed that in todays world most of the meddical research is supported by private owned sectors where it could be co-funded by Government sectors or individuals. In my opinion medical research could be co-funded by both private companies and Goverments that would ensure relatively effective progress in medicine research.
I would argue that medical research results in benefits to humanity in the end if successful. Private companies invest significant amount by giving funcing opportunities to smart brains of world for searching in medicine to fined solution that would help company to grow in market and eventually raise in market cap. But this funding does far much better then profit to company, It helps saving mankind from multiple diseases or even pandemics.
Likewise, Government should als play their role in investing on research in medicine that would really boost confidence of private sectors and it would benefit their local national and even international community. Goverment can assist in research opportunities in several way instead of direct financial support. Governments may reduce taxes on import of advanced machinery from otther part of world or it can contribute by ensuring local labs in medical universities are equiped with all necessay equipmenst. For instance, Govenments can support labs for renovation or help them in importing techincally advanced equipment that would eventually end up in supporting local research in medical field.
Individuals themslves cannot conduct research on their own without being supported by other sectors either financially or by providing enough tools.
I largely agree that medical research should be carried by Government and Private sector funded projects. It is mainly due to the enough capital and support to boost research and manage expenses that individual cannot cater.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both private companies and governments, while touching upon individuals. A clear position is presented from the outset and maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the role of private companies is reasonably expanded upon with notions of market cap and funding smart brains, whereas the discussion on individuals is quite brief and limited to stating that they cannot conduct research on their own. To move to a higher level, all parts of the prompt need to be explored with equally thorough depth and fully extended supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical structure that guides the reader through the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, such as the separate discussions for private companies and governments. However, the cohesion between and within sentences is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Likewise' and referencing expressions could be managed more flexibly and smoothly. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices connect ideas seamlessly without drawing attention to their mechanical deployment.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's core arguments regarding research funding. There are attempts to use less common items, such as 'market cap', 'pandemics', and 'renovation', but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'meddical', 'funcing', 'fined', 'als', 'otther', and 'techincally'. Furthermore, collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'investing on research' instead of 'investing in research'. These slips and limited control over less common lexical items restrict the vocabulary score, and to progress, the writer needs to expand their lexical range while improving spelling accuracy and collocational naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, showcasing attempts at multi-clause structures like 'It is mainly due to the enough capital and support to boost research and manage expenses that individual cannot cater.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('in todays world', 'by Government sectors'), incorrect preposition usage ('investing on research'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('Government should als play their role... and it would benefit'). These errors rarely impede communication and the meaning generally remains clear. To reach a higher standard, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine their mastery of articles and prepositions.
