Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, a huge amount of effort is being put into the medical field and research is being carried out on a number of projects. Most of these projects are being funded by private companies. In my view, these type of projects should be done by the government.

Private companies are investing a huge chunk of their money into medical research projects. For this purpose, they are hiring specialists from all over the world and paying them decent amount of money. Their aim is to excel in the field of medicine to grow their business and compete with other companies to be the best in business. Although, it is a good thing for the country's economy but an individual or a company will always think about the profit and their own shares. Moreover, with a developing world, many new diseases are on the rise and with this level of danger, research has to be done with pace. Private companies might face funding issues sometimes which can slow down the research.

On the other hand, the government is not short of funding and they can handle such projects with ease. Additionally, the government can arrange a big setup of labs and workers for this purpose. The government can also help people for free as compared to private companies or hospitals charging hefty amounts for the same purpose. The best example in this regard is China, who are advancing well in this field due to the government's support and prioritising the well being of their people. They have been very successfull recently in producing new vaccines and cure for different types of cancers.

In conclusion, government should be the one carrying out the research on medicine instead of private companies or individuals. This way, they can even increase their export and make a name in the field of medicine globally like China.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe governments should conduct medical research, and you address both private funding and government involvement. The discussion of companies’ profit motives and the government’s ability to provide public access is relevant. However, some points are asserted more than explained. For example, you say private firms “might face funding issues,” but do not show why this is likely or how it would affect research. The China example is also broad: the claims about vaccines and cancer treatments would be more persuasive with a specific illustration or explanation of how government support produced these outcomes. Develop these points and acknowledge a possible benefit of private research before explaining why government leadership is preferable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on private companies, a contrasting paragraph on government, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument. At times, however, connections feel mechanical, and some references are not fully clear. For instance, “with this level of danger” does not specify which danger you mean, while “For this purpose” could refer to either investment or research. The conclusion also repeats the main position without adding much synthesis. Use more precise references and connect each supporting point explicitly to your central argument to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “medical research,” “specialists,” “funding,” “vaccines,” and “prioritising the well being.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt more specific expressions such as “hefty amounts.” Some wording is informal or imprecise for an academic essay: “a huge chunk of their money,” “decent amount of money,” and “make a name” could be replaced with more formal, precise alternatives. There are also collocation and word-form issues, such as “research on medicine” and “cure for different types of cancers.” Spelling errors such as “successfull” and “prioritising” (inconsistent with the American spelling “prioritizing,” if that is your chosen variety) should be checked carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive clause beginning “Although” and a comparison with “as compared to.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “these type of projects” needs plural agreement (“these types”), and “paying them decent amount” needs an article (“a decent amount”). The sentence beginning “Although, it is a good thing…” is incorrectly punctuated and is not a complete independent sentence as written; connect it to the following clause without the comma after “Although.” There are also agreement and sentence-control issues in “the government … they,” and “government should be the one” needs an article. Review articles, agreement, and clause punctuation while retaining your varied sentence structures.
