Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

A large number of people nowadays argue medical research projects should be funded by private companies. Although, private companies and individuals funding can help enormously, I believe such medical related research projects funding should be done by government because it offers convenience and better security.

One of the major reasons to believe medical research funding should be carried out by governmet is that its more convenient. This is because medical related research benifits the nation, furthermore maintaining balance about such funding will be relatively more easy to handle for government as they have to handle more such cases. For instance, ever funding government make toward some project is assigned to a particular group, who will then handle ever matter related to it, making it more convenient.

Another major reason is that it helps keep things legally smooth. This is because medical field itself is very sensitive, any disbute related to it can create major controvery. So keeping it under government control keep it safe from any outside invade and negative framing. Any legal issue happens then the government handels it themselves and no other private companies or individual get dragged. For example, In context of Nepal, if any medical research team gets in trouble because of funding related problem they can go direct to the assined group of people and ask directly for the problem.

In conclusion, eventhough funding from private and individual can provide some better security, I believe it should be the government that should take the responsibility when it come to sponsering their medical field research because it can help better protect it from legal issue and makes it more convenient.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe the government should fund medical research, and you give two relevant reasons—convenience and legal protection—supported by examples, including the reference to Nepal. This addresses the central question, but the discussion is only partly developed. The claim that government funding is “more convenient” is not fully explained, and the example about assigning a project to a group does not show clearly why this is better than private or individual funding. The legal-protection point is also broad, with little explanation of how government oversight would prevent disputes. To strengthen the response, compare the options directly and develop each reason with a specific, clearly explained example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “One of the major reasons,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow this structure. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some connections between claims are unclear. For example, “furthermore maintaining balance about such funding” does not clearly connect the benefit to government convenience, while “So keeping it under government control” follows a long sentence containing several ideas. Use clearer referencing and vary the transitions. Organising each body paragraph around one claim, followed by explanation and a directly relevant example, would make the progression more convincing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “medical research,” “funding,” “legally,” and “government control,” so the main topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make parts difficult to interpret. Phrases such as “outside invade,” “negative framing,” and “keep things legally smooth” are not natural in this context; “legal disputes,” “external interference,” and “ensure legal oversight” would express the ideas more precisely. Spelling errors such as “governmet,” “benifits,” and “controvery” are also noticeable. Build a more accurate set of topic-specific expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully, especially in key claims.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the opening (“Although…”) and explanatory clauses beginning “This is because.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence structure and grammatical control sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “Although, private companies and individuals funding can help enormously” is not a complete, correctly formed concessive clause, and “medical field itself is very sensitive, any dispute…” joins two independent clauses without suitable punctuation or a linking structure. There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “government handle” and “when it come to.” Practise forming complete complex sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation; this will make your reasoning easier to follow.
