Student answer (Band 5.5)
Recently, many medical research projects are sponsored by a private companies or individauls rather than government. Although there's no harm for both private organisations, some people or government funding medical research works but, i believe that majority of research should be carried out by the government.
Furthermore, government has more resources to fund medical study than private sectors, so this will enable the researchers to focus more on his/her studies and achieve a better grades. For example, some years back, some medical students from Anambra State University went to research funded by a private company, on the process the company unable to further the funds needed, this made the reaserch inconclusived. Whilist another set were later funded by state government, and funding was not the problem which made the students to complete their study and came back with a good results.
Anathor reason why it's better for government to sponsor research projects is that education is one of the duties of the government, they have budgets for it from the national assembly which worth in billions every year. For intance, in march 2025, Nigeria federal govenment passed a bill to support education, most especially medical students to ease their study loads. Although, i have seen a situations where private and individuals financed medical research like the one Dangote groups of companies did last year.
In conclusion, while it's important for private companies to funded medical reasearch but i strongly agree that government should mostly fund medical resarch projects because they there is already existing budget for it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you believe government should fund most medical research, while acknowledging a role for private sponsors. You give two relevant reasons—greater public resources and government responsibility for education—and support them with examples involving university research and Nigerian funding. This addresses the task, but the examples and reasoning are not equally developed. The Anambra example explains how interrupted private funding affected a project, whereas the claim about government budgets and the 2025 bill is asserted more than connected to the quality or continuity of medical research. The Dangote example is also mentioned without explaining its relevance. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why public funding is preferable and compare it directly with private funding, including possible limitations of each.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing is generally logical, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence’s contrast between private, individual, and government funding is difficult to follow, and “Although” in the final body paragraph introduces a concession without clearly linking it to the preceding point. The long Anambra example also contains several events in one sentence, making the progression harder to track. Use clearer sentence boundaries and make each paragraph’s central claim explicit before giving its example; ensure pronouns and transitions clearly identify the ideas they refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “funding,” “researchers,” and “government,” so the main subject is clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “inconclusive” and “sponsor research projects.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision: “reaserch,” “Anathor,” “funded medical research” where “fund” is needed, and “study loads” are examples. Repetition of “government,” “fund,” and “research” also makes the expression less flexible. Build a small set of accurate topic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise alternatives can help you express the contrast between public responsibility and private sponsorship without relying on repeated basic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession in “Although there’s no harm…” and a reason clause beginning “because.” This shows some range, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, several sentence structures and verb forms are faulty, particularly in longer sentences. For example, “Although there’s no harm for both private organisations, some people or government funding…” does not form a complete, clear clause, while “the company unable to further the funds” is missing a finite verb. Agreement and article errors also appear in “government has more resources,” “a better grades,” and “a situations.” In the conclusion, “they there is” creates a faulty clause. Practise building complete clauses, checking subject–verb agreement and singular/plural forms, and separating linked ideas with accurate punctuation.
