IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent time, Majority of research projects are sponsored by private organizations. In my opinion government should sponsor instead of a private industry because government has a huge amount of budget and they can motivate youth toward research.
on one hand if Government invest in research work instead of private company because if government research get success then not only they will earn profit but also country reputation get increase globally.
for example, when india decided to launch mission mangal then at first everyone laughed but when they succeeded they not only complete their mission but also earn reputation.
on other hand it also motivate youth toward the research because in our country there are very few amount of person who did research at global level therefore government need to encourage young generation by offering some scholarship and reward for participating in research.
for example, it is a human psychology human always get attracted toward new trends so if there will be any scholarship whole country will follow trend and get interest for research

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear overall preference for government funding and offer two relevant reasons: potential national benefits and encouraging young researchers. The examples of India’s Mars mission and scholarships help connect these points to the topic. However, the response addresses the question only partially: it does not explain whether individuals should fund research, and the comparison with private companies is not developed. The claim that successful research will bring profit and improve the country’s reputation also needs clearer explanation. Most ideas remain brief, and the response is 76 words below the required minimum, limiting the opportunity to develop reasons and examples. Explain the advantages and drawbacks of each funding source, then extend your preferred option with specific evidence or consequences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “on one hand” and “on other hand,” and examples that relate to each main point. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, the progression is limited: the first body paragraph’s contrast marker is not followed by a corresponding, clearly balanced argument, and the second paragraph repeats the idea of encouraging research without adding much development. Connections within sentences are sometimes unclear, particularly in the explanation of the Mars mission. Use topic sentences that state each reason, then explain and illustrate it in a logical sequence. More precise linking and clearer references would make the argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “research projects,” “sponsored,” “reputation,” “scholarship,” and “participating in research,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “huge amount of budget,” “very few amount of person,” and “follow trend.” Repetition of “research” and “government” also restricts flexibility. Aim for more accurate collocations and a wider set of terms, such as “public funding,” “researchers,” “scientific innovation,” and “incentives.” Check word forms and spelling as well: “succeeded” is used where “succeeded in completing” would be clearer, and “mangal” should be capitalised in the mission’s name.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if government research get success then…” and clauses explaining the effects of scholarships. However, these attempts are often faulty, and the response relies heavily on simple sentence patterns. Errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow: for example, “government has a huge amount of budget and they can motivate” shifts from singular to plural, while “country reputation get increase” has an unclear verb structure. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise building accurate sentences with “if” clauses and cause-and-effect connectors, and check subject–verb agreement and articles before submitting.
